It seems like everytime people bring his name up they say "You see, all LSU needs is a game manager like Matt Mauck." It's as if everyone forgets he threw for more touchdown passes in a single season than any quarterback in the history of the school up to that point.

yeah, Mauck had a bit more gunslinger in him than ppl acknowledge. hell, for all the "manager" stuff, the dude threw 14 INTs in 03.

IMHO Flynn was more of a game manager when he wasn't throwing interceptions to Kentucky and Arkansas. Somehow we also managed to beat Alabama that year despite Flynn's FOUR interceptions IN THE FIRST HALF. He did play lights out in vs. Ohio State when it really mattered though.

go look up Mauck's stats in big games in 2003. He was awful against ranked teams. Something like 3 or 4 tds and 12-14 turnovers.

Flynn was much better. Mauck was a turnover machine. Mauck had one of the best defenses in CFB history to back up his play, Flynn not so much

Had Flynn been our QB his Juior year he'd have won 2 NC's

we lost the same amount of games in 2007 as we did in 2006. The only difference was in 2006 we lost to top 10 teams on the road instead of unranked teams, one at home and in 2007. Its really amazing that people credit Matt Flynn for WVU beating Pitt.

4 and 11

if only Arky and Auburn had ended up ranked (both won bowl games)

Clearly Flynn, the guy lit up the Patriots.

You know I seem to remember a time when Flynn struggled, and fans were screaming to put in RP. It is kind of funny how people seem to forget this after he won the NC. Don't get me wrong about Flynn. He was a solid QB, but often times this fan bases' favorite QB is the guy on the bench.
Seriously, and people throwing Mettenberger's name into this argument when he has yet to throw a pass in the SEC? Granted I think the kid is oozing with potential, but I seem to also remember JJ having quite a bit of hype when he came to LSU as well.
And for the record my vote is Flynn. Mostly because of his Junior year when they put him in for relief of JaMarcus. He had a couple of games that season where his first pass went for a TD to Bennie Brazell.
Also because Matt Flynn and Matt Damon are the same person. LINK

I'm going to say Mauck. First, Flynn split time with RP. Mauck was the full time starter. He came in for an injured Rohan and pretty much single handedly won the SEC championship in 2001. He had a better win percentage as he went 16-2 at LSU. I'm not saying he's heads and tails better than Flynn, and who doesn't love Flynn, but Mauck was the better QB for LSU IMO.

Is this a serious question?

It's not even close. Flynn>>>>>>Mauck

he had the best oline and best defense in the history of LSU. Flynn had neither and was much better against the real teams on the schedule.

Mauck padded his stats with 5 tds against the likes of ULM.

They seemed indistinguishable.

Remember that show "Quantum Leap", where some guy takes over someone else's body? My guess is it's real, and both our Matts were in fact test-bodies for Roger Staubach to leap into.

And hopefully we have another Matt in the wings

I give a slight edge to Flynn. I think Flynn had the better arm and the O was outstanding in 2007 despite losing two first round WR's in Bowe and Davis. QB has to get a chunk of that credit (though certainly not all of it). Also, I am pretty sure that Flynn never started a game in which the Tigers scored fewer than 27 points (and that's in regulation - might be more if you count OT scoring). Wow. No knock on Mauck; he hada huge hand in 1 NC and 2 SEC titles. But Mauck had a MUCH better D to rely on and he often relied heavily on it to get wins. 17 points against OM, 17 against Ga., 21 (14 offensive) against OU, and of course the loss to a poor UF team in which the Tigers put 0 offensive points on the board. Not all his fault, of course, but it causes me to give the edge to Flynn.

Yeah, because Joseph Barksdale, Ciron Black, Herman Johnson, Brett Helms, Quinn Johnson, Jacob Hester, Richard Dickson, D. Byrd, Brandon LaFell, Tyson Jackson, Glenn Dorsey, Ali Highsmith, RJF, Kirston Pittman, Drake Nevis and Darry Beckwith sucked.

But lost to Kentucky and ArKansas? Mauck lost to Florida and Virgina Tech and that was it. You make it sound like Flynn didn't get to play Tulane (poorly) and La Tech. Mauck won two SEC championship games and Flynn never played in one. They beat Tennessee without him, so it can be argued that the 2007 team didn't even need him. You can't same the same thing for Mauck. LSU was 5-1 in 2002 with Mauck then suffered through Marcus Randall who went 3-4 after Mauck got hurt.

I liked 'em both. If I had to do a pick-up team, I'd probably pick Matt Mauck for a slight edge in leadership, guts, and for blazing a national championship trail LSU hadn't been on since the Dietzel days. But Flynn was no slouch and he did the re-peat.

Flynn...Both had weapons all around them and great defenses. Flynn was mobile enough to create things and had a better arm.
