Can't believe the women's basketball team is letting him go. An honest man who worked at LSU for more than two decades and guided the program behind closed doors.

I guess they couldn't afford him.

You don't feel that a head coach should be able to pick his/her staff?

Aw, sorry to hear that. I had a brother that used to coach high school basketball, and he would rave about the tips and techniques Starkey would teach at the LSU clinics.

He made it through a three coaches before... no reason why he couldn't make it through this one.

All of those were inhouse hires and Chancellor didn't have a staff to bring with him. He understands the deal and he can get a job plenty of places if he wants to. I wouldn't be surprised if he got a job in the AD like Chancellor(lower paying of course), except he actually did work in his position.

If she didn't want to hire him there's no reason she should have to.

He'll probably get a job in the athletic building and get paid to do jack shite. Boo hoo

You do realize that when you get into the coaching profession you have to be prepared for this kind of situation. It's not exactly a stable career.

Coach Starkey was truly one of the best assistants in all of the NCAA. His defensive game-planning were second to none. He stayed at LSU through three transitions and turned down the HC job because he understood his vital role as an assistant. I wish he could have led us to that NC in his interim stint here in the Final Four run, but I wish him the very best. Thanks, Coach Starkey.

If any of you followed the women's program you would know the reason he wanted to stay at LSU was due to his wife's illnes. That is why he turned down other head coaching positions.
It is truely a sad day for the LSU Womens Basketball Family.

I follow the program I know about his wife's illness but that doesn't make him immune if the new coach wants bring in a new staff. I'm sure Travis Mays wanted to stay as well but that's how the business works.

First and foremost because you are a lying POS and don't know shite about the program or the history of LSU basketball. Secondly, read this article to see how much the university thought about him while there was an another AD. F Alleva also.

Quote: "He's the most loyal person I've ever known in my life," Hayslett said. "This is what LSU needed him to do right now, and there was no question he was going to do it.

"He's one of those guys who will take his shirt off right now if you need it."

Starkey had 10 tickets for Sunday night's game, and invited his old junior-high coach, Allen Osborne, to sit in the second row. Starkey walked into the stands and talked to his mentor about an hour before tip-off. He told Osborne that he didn't take the Lady Tigers to the Final Four.

"They took me," he said.

Starkey was never a star in junior high, but he was always early and never missed practice. Osborne described him as a role player.

As the weeks went on and the Lady Tigers kept advancing in the NCAA Tournament, Osborne tried to convince Starkey to reconsider his stance on being a lifetime assistant. But Starkey is set in his ways.

"I worry about him because I'm pretty close to him," Osborne said. "He'll get a job, but he loves LSU and he loves those kids. That's pretty important to him."
