LSU had the dubious honor of losing the last NCAA tournament consolation game, a 78-74 loss to Virginia in the 1981 Final Four in Philadelphia.(the NCAA had consolation games in the Regionals/Sweet 16 through the 1975 season).
Season ended in a thud. LSU was only one of three teams in SEC history during an 18 game SEC schedule to post a 17-1 mark and the only one to start out 17-0. But Indiana overcame a 3 pt halftime deficit to win going away 67-49 and Virginia had lost to ACC foe North Carolina 78-65 in the other National Semifinal.
Picture shows Ralph Sampson getting a rebound in the game over John Tudor and Greg Cook (notice the LOUISIANA STATE on the jerseys instead of LSU) with future Cavalier coach Jeff Lamp in the foreground.
Of course, only a handful of folks in and around Baton Rouge and Charlottesville were paying any attention to this as something a more pressing couple of hours south of Philadelphia down I-95 was taking place.

Those were the good ole days of LSU basketball! Rudy Macklin got in trouble for saying something about not caring about Reagan getting shot, he wanted to play.

And Indiana and UNC played the game that night. What a weird day.
I am pretty sure that the consolation game was not televised.

Ch 33 showed it in BR. I think only the NBC affiliates in either the towns or surrounding areas of the playing schools had the game televised.

that's about the only time sampson got the better of greg cook; though lsu lost the game, sampson lost his battle w/ cook, who harassed sampson to the point that the uva center fouled out. cook earned his scholarship that day

Well, I guess it was about time considering it was his last game as an LSU Tiger.

Wasn't televised nationally ... only picked up in certain markets.
The last consolation game ever played at the NCAA Final 4.
The loss to Indiana had to have had a "hangover" effect on the Tigers. It was a devastating loss for a team which was the #1 seed of the entire tourney ... hence the white jerseys w/Louisiana State in both the Indiana and Virginia game.
FWIW, the jerseys in 1979-80 and 1980-81 were the same. A sort of gold on the road; white at home.

After the disappointment, the recruiting buzz was all about Stefon Johnson, nicknamed "Baby Magic." He was recruited from Texas, and was going to be the next big star in LSU hoops. I think he lasted for just the 1981-82 season.

My dad was transferred from Louisiana up to Tulsa about a year before so no TV for us. It shows you how far things have come in terms of TV coverage.
