Question about the X-Files series progression

Right now, I am almost done season 1. Does it continue as a Law and Order type show where they are sent in each week to solve a case, solve it, and that's the end of that episode?
I remember watching some of the later episodes with my parents when the show was airing. I remember the Smoking Man, Skinner, etc. and it really seemed like there was a running storyline for the episodes I was watching. Is that how the show gets later on, or am I just remembering it incorrectly.
Deepthroat pops up every few episodes, but there isn't really much of a continuous story except for Mulder's search for the truth. For some reason I remember my parents getting excited each week to "find out what happens next."

They are split between monster of the week episodes and the overall story arc of alien conspiracy episodes.
By the time you're on season 4-6 you will have to agree that it is the greatest show ever. There are more monster of the week episodes, but those are the most creative and IMO the most satisfying

Good. I like having story lines that run through many seasons of a show.
Season 1 is pretty much purely monster of the week episodes. When do they start getting more half and half?

It combined singular episodes within an overall arc better than any show ever.

Around the middle of season 2 the show really starts coming into its own. There is a two episode arc about a character named "Duane Barry". Outstanding.

I really wish they would have ended the series after season 7.
Just one tip, after season 5, make sure you watch the X-Files movie "Fight the Future" before you watch season 6. It is not mandatory, but later they refer to the movie in the season.

Yes, and I've always felt that's where the series should have ended. Definitely work in the movie after you watch season 5.

X files fight the future...the one you must watch is on Netflix instant stream. Keep watching. It is absolutely the most creative show ever. Fringe constantly rips them off

Uh...no. However season 8&9 are not as good, and the finale is among the worst for any show ever. The movie should have been the beginning of the end. Also, Samantha's story ended up tanking for me. I don't think Carter had a larger plan for the story nor planned on duchovny being a star...he should have planned an ending for season 7 but didnt

I agree with this. I still contend that seasons 1-5 are among the best TV ever produced. Greatness.
That is why I admire J.J. Abrams for cutting off LOST at season 6. Sure, he could've dragged it on for another 2-3 years, but surely some of the actors would've left (a la Duchovny), and the show would've become a shell of its former self.

It's been quite a while since I've watched it but my memory is that the season 5/the movie is where the series peaked and then the main story arc started slowly spiraling out of control. Season 6-7 were still good, but they were the beginning of the decline.

The beginning of season 6 expands on the alien morphology (nuclear plant episode) yes the story arc peaked, but it was unsuitable for an ending. The monster of the weeks were very good through 8 but the alien story and Samantha story just spiraled out of control with stupidity because they were expanding the story when they should have been ending it. I would say the final episode of 6, which is great, was the beginning of the end. The alien craft with religious writings (cool but they didn't go in the appropriate direction from there.)

Basically the story peaked at the ending of six and quickly declined, yet monster of the weeks with mulder & scully remained great

No spoilers buy how in the hell do you come up with such a brilliant show and make the finale a piece of shite. That's bullshite and the writers and creator should be crucified for this. Example scrubs kept getting fricked by the network and never knew how many more season or episodes they would have but Bill lawerence had a vision way before about how it would end and it was brilliant without the help of NBC
