re: Bruce Pearl VS. Trent Johnson. Who should be LSU's coach?

If he didn't have this cheating thing over his head, I'd be all over it. Pearl knows the game and gets good recruits. So I'm conflicted. Either way, I'm not much of a poster on LSU basketball, but Trent's time has come to kiss the bricks.
That's an important point. And usually, it's better in the long term to avoid the drama.
But I believe Pearl could thrive at LSU with a strong AD in charge. At UT, they all cheat. It's the culture. It's scandal after scandal in Knoxville.
Secondly, he's paying for his crimes. In money and suspension. Why shouldn't he get another chance.
The only risk is his past. If he can keep his nose clean, everything else is a step up.

anyone who wants that cheating bastard at LSU.

I'd trade in a heartbeat. If the gears aren't spinning in our AD's brain, already, they need to start.
Pearl is EXACTLY what LSU needs. Excitement.
Having said that, no chance in hell we do anything that creative.
This would be embarrassing were it the Poli Board.

Anytime you invite someone like Pearl or Kiffin in, you invite a spotlight that wasn't there before.
Any little discrepancies with the program that would have normally been ignored will be harped on

How bout a cheating bastard who has tried to rat other schools out for cheating via taping phone conversations with recruits.

I think Pearl would be able to lock up Houston and New Orleans.
He wouldn't have to cheat. . .at least not at the level required to get a kid from 1000 miles away to come to Knoxville.

Bruce Pearl is a modern day Dale Brown except possibly slightly better Xs and Os. Both Pearl and Daddy Dale could sell their program to the fans media and players. I want someone to bring excitement to the program. TJ does not do this and if you are going to be bland all business type you get believers by winning....as of right now we arent doing that. If we are gonna suck at least have fun while we suck. I say give TJ one more year and if we cut him lose I believe we could do a lot worse then Pearl after he gets blackballed from coaching for a year.

And Dale might have been the greatest recruiter in SEC history.

Personally, I think we should hang onto Trent until Texas fires Rick Barnes.
Pearl would be a great fit at LSU, though, and would definitely bring some excitement and passion back to LSU basketball.

I'd hire Bruce Pearl in a heartbeat. He's exactly what LSU needs to revive LSU's basketball program.

quote:And? Point is, people are laughing at them. And if Kentucky doesn't dodge the NCAA bullet (as Memphis and UMass did not), then they will be laughing a lot more.
The "Laughing people" are watching KY on TV
If you don't care about people laughing at the program, then don't sweat it. But the fact Kentucky is winning doesn't change the fact that people are laughing at them for hiring an NCAA magnet like Calipari.

bruce does need a year off so that the public will say "the guy did wrong, he served his time" ... that kind of thing, to get the public/media back on his side.
the only thing that would trouble me about Pearl is I have a feeling the NCAA doesn't like him and will always be looking at his every move.

Calipari in year 1 at KY, had them in the Elite 8.
That is not tough when you have 5 1st. round draft picks on your roster.

If someone would have thought about this earlier you could have had Billy Gillespie.
Don't worry, though, he'll get bored in a couple of years at TTech. You can get him then.
Or if wanderlusts are your thing, isn't Larry Brown available?

quote:The cheating isn't the problem; it's the lying. Lying to the NCAA about his relatively minor violations is stupid . . . like, Trindon to DE stupid. With ridiculously poor judgment like that, who knows what kind of trouble he might bring to LSU? Point shaving? Steroids? More lying to the NCAA about minor violations? Frankly, the reward of a basketball program in the hands of a guy who's only gotten past the Sweet 16 once is just not worth the risk of major NCAA sanctions, imo. That's not great basketball; that's pretty good basketball. Hell, John Brady got us past the Sweet 16 once . . .
He wouldn't have to cheat

Common ground.
We're probably a little more familiar with Pearl than the average LSU fan. If he could stay clean, he'd
build a monster at LSU.
