I've read a lot of posts in this thread, and from what I can tell after watching the replay, it's really just a complete judgement call. So it makes sense that both sides are pretty well represented in this thread.

But in real time, that call is going to be made 9/10 times, like LE said. Just based off of the collision alone, it's instinct for an umpire to make that call.

Too bad the umps didn't get to see it in a slow motion replay.

THANK YOU! This guy is a douche for starting this thread saying he was watching the replay. I'm sure if the umps could watch all the replays every call would be right and every game would last 10 hours... Damn OP is a jackass, especially with the "I coach highschool baseball" shite... AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, That's the funniest one I've heard in a while... come on guys, he's right, he's a high school coach, clearly he's the winner in all this.

Why aren't all the close calls @ first being argued as strongly as this one?

Calls are missed in every game, and as you say, we won.............now let's win the last two and get the bats going again!

Good play by Jones. He boots the ball, runs over the baserunner, lays on the field like he's really hurt and gets the call. Jones must watch European soccer, cause that was a hell of a performance he put on. Jones knew he was going to hit the guy as soon as he overran the ball.

Whoa, you big time yeah.

So I guess since you coach a high school baseball team, you know more than a Div 1 college baseball umpire. I knew more about baseball in high school than my coach did so what you said don't mean shite.

Ok. Here is the final say so on this matter then we're done. And I mean it. After further review the call on the field stands. Jack Hunt gets the t.d.

There. Go get your coffee.

I'm 9 pages late but... My buddy and I had this detailed discussion last night. Upon first viewing, I also thought that he blew the call. The fielder has the right to the ball, but not after the ball has gotten past him, as it did. After I watched the replay several times, in real time and slow motion, the umpire absolutely made the right call. There is no way that Jones would have been able to avoid the runner during his attempt to field the ball.

Those saying that Nola later tagged out the runner aren't right either. It's either interference on the runner or the fielder. (Kind of like a block or a charge, it has to be one or the other when a collision occurs). Had it been the latter, the runner from first would have been awarded third, the original runner from second awarded home, so it would have been 1st and 3rd with 1 out still and a run in.

In short: during the bang-bang play the umpire made the "safe" call which was to call the runner's interference, and it turns out being the correct call.

Great play by the young jones

He noticed what was about to happen, lowered his shoulder, and then played it off like he was hurt

Excellent heads up baseball

I know he his fast, chavis may want to give him a look

the runner made no attempt to avoid the fielder which the rule clearly states the runner has to do thats where the interference happens. Hey coach just because your from or live in texass dont make your assumption right even though most people from texass think they are.

The ball was past the runner when Jones ran him over. Had jones not misplayed the ball, he would have tagged the guy out.

No obviously you dont know the rules. He was still within reach of making a play on the ball when the collision occurred. Keep in mind this was a bang band call that was indeed called correctly. Don't make this seem as LSU lucked out. The UMP did his job and there were plenty of other calls in the game that where more controversial than this one. That call on first base would make a little league Ump cringe, he was out by a full step. We won no reason to dwell on this shite
