We have a responsibility to our players - past, present, and future, to advance this league forward, not take 3 steps back.

They refuse to give that information to us. They think we should just trust them. Would you?

The NFL brought this fight to us - they want $1 billion back, we just want financial information to back up that request

To our fans - I give you my word that we as players are doing everything we can to negotiate with the NFL towards a fair deal

I don't like propaganda Drew. It's so unbecoming.

That's good enough for me.
Sadly, the owners seem to be the ones doing the foot dragging.

And I don't like criticism of Drew. It's REALLY unbecoming....Mr. 81 posts

I respect the hell out of Drew, but honestly I do not care which side gets the "better" deal. I do not care about the fairness of the deal. The only thing I want is to be able to watch games and have an interest.
I don't doubt that Drew is telling the truth about their efforts, but their goal does not mean a thing to me.

I don't see any propaganda in his tweets.

Agreed.
It's awesome to see him at the forefront of all this. There's a reason Jay Cutler isn't doing anything. Brees is all class and it goes to show.
I'm totally on the side of the players here. The owners just seem greedy to me. You already make millions and millions while a lot of players make the minimum to smash their bodies around while you make money off of it.

Love Drew but don't like the quote. He's not saying that he's concerned about the fans. He's implying that if they don't get what they want then it doesn't matter when or if the season starts.

I don't see how you can take that from that quote. The man moved his family into the heart of N.O. right after Katrina, has given countless time and $$ to area causes, and constantly talks about his appreciation of the fans. The idea that he's just some mercenary in all this is unwarranted. He's got other players depending on him as well who don't make nearly as much $$ and he has to speak for them as well.
edt: what more does the man have to do to prove himself to you?

Check this out:

The first post in the comments pretty much summarizes why you should not place any blame on the players for getting or not getting "what they want".
Basically, the players want to keep the status quo while continuing to work out a deal. CERTAIN OWNERS don't want to do that, and they are driven by GREED. Period.
Here's the text of what I am referencing:

Here's the text of what I am referencing:

The player's offer was for a flat fixed rate of 50%. The owners just want to increase that offset. Why? This is what doesn't make sense. When it was learned that TV money represented $4B, coupled with the league's design to add two games, seemed fairly clear that $500m was the target, and they were just starting out at $1B. No way do they ask the players to play 2 more games and give back money on top of that. But I don't get why the owners keep pushing that damn offset increase rather than co-opting that fixed rate proposal by the players.
When the old CBA was ratified total revenue was ~$6B. Minus the $1B offset, multiplied by the player's rate of 59.5%, the players were getting 49.6% of total revenues. If the cap had continued, with projections of $9B in total revenue, under the same terms the players would be getting 52.9% of TR.
If the owners bottom dollar deal is an additional $500M in offset, then with all CBA things remaining the same, the player's cut of TR would be.......... 49.6%. Exactly the same as the last CBA they grew to hate and opt out of. Hit the reset button. So if the owners get what they want, what happens a few years from now when revenues crest $13B? They're right back to the same spot they are today, crying about their chintzy offset, duking out another CBA showdown.
Why are the owner's so committed to pressing for an increased fixed offset that won't grow porportionally to increased revenues? And just puts them right back in the same untenable spot a few years from now?
If the issue for the owners is not so much the present, but the future, as you suggest, then I don't understand their obsession with a regressive offset. And I don't get why they don't just jump on the player's offer of a flat 50%.

You really hurt me by mentioning how few posts I have.
But you can't deny that this is just another salvo in a publicity battle. I'm not saying Drew doesn't feel bad that a deal might not be reached but it's being used as both an apology and as a way to put pressure on the owners.
If the two sides can't come to a deal, they should be ashamed of themselves; both the owners and the players.

A little while ago, I saw the horrifying images of a debris-filled Tsunami swallowing pristine farm land in Japan. And as news of more and more lives lost emerges, the message to the men gathering at the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service in D.C. became obvious. Guys, it’s time to gain some perspective. There are far, far bigger problems in the world than figuring out how to carve up a $9 billion pie. Failure to work this out, especially against the backdrop of an enormous humanity crisis in Japan, could trigger a dramatic fan backlash. And as the two parties jockey for ways to place blame on each other, the truth is that everyone will lose if reason and common sense and goodwill don’t prevail. Prevail they should. It’s time for Roger Goodell and DeMaurice Smith to earn their millions and rise above the noise and behave as the stewards of the game that they are. Or at least that they’re supposed to be. If they can’t, then maybe they simply aren’t the right men for the jobs they hold.

The players put a perfectly good and fair (more fair to the owners than current deal, fwiw) on the table and the owners STORMED OUT OF THE ROOM.
That should tell you who's trying to deal fairly and honestly and who's not...

hopefully Brees doesn't get fricked in the new CBA. He is due a HUGE payday. he has been playing for average QB money

Anyone seen simmons' write up on the lockout? A bit of a reach, but still breaks down on what the owners are trying to pull

So what? Should Drew NOT be fighting for a fair deal?

I love Drew and the Saints as much as the next guy, but it isn't about "trusting anyone". It's about you working for your employer, being unsatisfied with your work environment (# of games, pay, etc....). When was the last time you went to your boss and demanded he/she show you the companies financial reports/situation because you felt you weren't getting enough compensation?
For whatever reason, these players feel they are obligated to complete transparency from their employers and also that they have the right to review their financial reports line by line....Sorry, doesn't work that way.
It's a business, not your personal piggy bank.
And as for lack of healthcare.........join the rest of the country. At the least you had an advantage to save some of the MILLIONS you made to prepare for a loss of job or other bad financial situations, like any normal individual should......but you didn't. So don't blame the owners for your lack of financial preparedness.
I'm not biased one way or the other, but I'm not gonna pin this on the owners just because they have money.

I love Drew Brees but frankly I would be happy if he kept his fricking twitter closed during this crap. Shut up dude, both sides are money grubbing whores so don't try and act like the players are all Holy

Not a reach at all. Good allegory.
