For brackish and fresh water.....mainly in big lake and Houma areas. Any suggestions? And where should I look for one? Wall marks?

Either or....
I've heard of the castaway, but are they too heavy? What do they run?

Can't go wrong with this reel on a decent medium action rod. I have had my calcutta for 13 years. It has outlasted two rods and still going strong.
As for rods, castaway, falcon, shimano etc. Get one that feels good.

Only reel I fish with w/ a falcon or allstar rod.
If willing to spend the $ though you can't beat gloomis rods.

Have they had the Louisiana Sportsman Show in Gonzales yet? They usually have some deals. I went to the one in Birmingham and they had curados for $99 and Skeet Reese rods for $79. On a side note I've had good luck with my Revos and Carrot Stiks.

Pretty much the perfect south LA setup. I have tried cheaper reels and they just don't last. Ambassadors corrode like crazy, I have a shimano corsair that is all but seized up and I tried a pinnacle that didn't make is a season. The calcutta is the only one I have never had trouble with. Over the long run they are well worth the $180 price tag.

I use to break mine down and clean them a few times a year and they stayed so smooth. My dad found that you can send the reel to shimano w/ a check for less than $15 and they will clean it and replace any missing parts. I have to find out if they still do that.
He fishes with gloomis and when they break he sends it back and gets a new one so the $ is worth it for them also. I will say during the winter when fishing slow you will feel more biutes with the gloomis.

I have had durability issues with Loomis, I switched to St. Croix rods a few years back and have been very happy. Their quality is fantastic with a warranty program that cant be beat..

I don't know what your budget is, but I would take a serious look at the Abu Garcia REVO series. If you plan on doing a lot of brackish water fishing, they make a version specifically for saltwater use, the REVO Inshore.
I recently purchased the REVO SX and am extremely pleased with it. The drag on the REVO is amazing at 24lbs.
I also have a Calcutta 200B and have no complaints with it either, I just prefer the REVO at around the same price point. The Curado is another solid solid reel with a longer track record than the REVO for around the same price with a low-profile design.
