I'm looking to by my first pistol. Just wanted to hear opinions on what's a good gun to have and somewhat simple to keep up. Bc again this will be my first one.

buy the one that feels best in your hand when you pick it up. If you are looking for simple to operate pistols I would look at Springfield XD series, Smith & Wesson M&P series, and Glocks.
These are all good pistols that can be bought for 450-650.00.

Well cuz, first of all you're gonna hear alot of different views. It's a big Ford vs. Chevy type deal. Most of the firearms are good enough for a beginner and some are probably more than you want to spend.
On that note, anything Glock or the Ruger p95 or p89 would suit you good if you're looking for a larger caliber than a .22. On the .22 side there are lots to choose from. The Ruger MkII or MkIII would be a good way too.

What do you plan to do with it?

Its best to provide a budget you are looking at staying within and we can try to guide you into the models that are within the budget and are realiable.

Well I am leaning toward a .40 or 9 mm. My cousin just bought a Springfield .45 and it's more gun than i feel comfortable with.
I'm not trying to spark a debate, just more or less trying to see what makers are good and which ones to stay away from.

Just personal protection and range shooting.

I would stay away from Taurus Semi-auto's and I would stay away Smith and Wesson Sigma Series pistols.
You can also look at the Sig P2022 in 9mm, its suppose to be a really nice pistol for 400.00

Are there advantages to having a .40 vs a 9mm or vice versa?

This is a debate all within itself.
I own quite a few pistols and I own zero 40 cals. A well placed shot with a Hollow point 9mm will do what you need it to do. In my opinion. 9mm is also easier to shoot as far as recoil, and 9mm ammo is also cheaper than .40. The more you enjoying shooting your weapon the better you will be with it if you ever have to use it.

Street cred goes up with a .40.

Thanks man I aprreciate your insight.
I was just wondering if one would be better than the other for someone who has never owned a pistol.
But basically whatever I get just make sure I like in my hand and practice with it alot.

Either will be fine. I chose 9mm because I like shooting it more (lower recoil) and ammo is cheaper.

This is the mindset you need to have.

You could be reinforcing bad habits/bad form.

I dont own a 9mm just because I bought a .40 and I'm happy with it. However, I'm looking for a 9mm right now because I want to shoot more and the .40 ammo is more expensive. I'm lookin at the sig 2022 at Academy. $399 aint bad and I'm just looking for a range pistol mainly.
