Question for our Rockets friends (and Hornets fans of course)

The trade deadline is February 24.

According to HOOPSHYPE, the Rockets are about $4 million over the luxury tax. The Hornets are about $4 million under the tax.(Tax is just over $70 million)

Brad Miller makes about $4 million and the Hornets need a big man

The Rockets are 6 games back in the loss column for the last playoff spot right now.

Question: Lets say they're 10 back by that Feb. 24 date. Would Houston take a $4 million exception from the Hornets for Miller, instead a paying the tax on a non playoff team?

Both teams may have to make 1 other minor move, but this could essentially put both teams right below the line.

Would you do it?

No, because you are still on the hook with Miller for 2 more seasons after this year. He turns 35 in April

No you can't, not many teams in the market for a 36 year old center that is still owed $10 million, with a new CBA and lower salary cap

I would think the Hornets would be more interested in Jeffries, once the Rockets cut him

If we could get him for this year only, I'd like him as a backup. We don't need anymore bad contracts, and it'll be too hard to unload him in the offseason.

He's not nearly as good as he once was.

You really trust Jeffries guarding western conference bigs in the playoffs? He's not an upgrade over what we have, imo.

To me, the Miller contract isnt crippling. 4.7 next year and 5 the year after isnt terrible.

We know upgrading the frontcourt is a must. There just arent many options out there that can be a legitimate backup center, without hurting us financially.

Miller gives a playoff-tested center that wont come in and shite all over himself like Mbenga

I don't think Miller is that much of an upgrade over what we have. He is 35 years old.

We just went through the same exercise to get rid of a bad Posey contract. If you bring on Miller, the Hornets will have $18.42 million committed to just Centers next season. That is also money you can't offer David West

Jeffries was an example, there will be guys getting bought out after the trade deadline all over the league.

I agree the Hornets need another big to compete, but I think Miller is an expensive option

I just don't understand how the CBA is going to change the salary cap structure. Teams like the Lakers and Magic have just ridiculous salary numbers. How are they just going to change it and make it beneficial to have a low number.

The only reason I say this is because I dont think the Lakers could care less right now about their number. I can't see the Lakers being ok with penalties because they knew how to work the system.

That is why I just don't understand why you wouldn't want a high salary number. If anything I would think they are going to give some exception to forgive the high number teams to put organizations on equal footing.

I also think they will have measures to help organizations to easily retain their own players.

Lakers are only one team. Small market teams like Milwaukee and New Orleans would never be able to compete with LA. The small market teams will outnumber the elite teams and outvote them

Lakers would like a cap too though, the owners want rules to protect them from themselves, and giving bad contracts.

i wouldn't--for the money purposed pointed out above, plus miller isn't the 'active' of big that we need. not a rebounder or shot blocker, and i don't know much about his defense, but he looks slow as hell so his rotations can't be that great.

though i appreciate his overall game, just not what we need to get markedly better right now.
