MJ see PT next year?

With the lack of experience and depth at DT next year, does Mickey Johnson have a chance of seeing the field some as a true freshman?
I would have to say, yes, at this point.
We need bodies at DT and I think any guys we get in this class are going to be looked at earlier on to contribute. Anthony Johnson might be the starter against the Ducks.

I think it will depend on how davenport and downs progress during the Spring.

Brockers and downs will start IMO - won't be surprised to see freak getting reps early and often

Downs is a bit small. Unless he has a great spring I thing freak will get the nod assuming that he plays as advertised.
If Davenport shows up it could be really interesting to watch how the DL rotation works next year.

Miles likes his upperclassman as starters and downs played a good deal the last couple years when healthy. That's all I'm basing this speculation on.

Davenport may very well move to OL. He hasn't even been discussed at DL with any regularity. He had a lot to work on coming out of HS.
I don't see any way Downs can be the starter. He was practically silent this past year. Ego really needs to have a coming out party this year. If he can be solid, then it gives us a huge boost. If we have Brockers, Ego, Anthony Johnson, Downs, Logan, and Mickey Johnson all contributing then I think we have an alright DT group. The DEs should be very good. It wouldn't surprise me to see Miles move Chauncey Ag. inside to DT so that we have some experience at the position which would allow for KeKe and Montgomery to play on the field at the same time a little more. Lavar Edwards is also someone that has loads of potential and if it all clicks he could be a fantastic player.
I see the DEs having to get the pressure in 2011 and the DTs just being able to hold their own and not get pushed around too much. The LBs this year will really have a challenge. Minter has to play well and Baker and Francois need to be leaders.

I lurk some now, but I have been very busy with other things lately so recruiting has unfortunately taken a bit of a backseat. I am really excited for the Spring practices--I love the future of the team. We do have some holes--but so does every college. If we patch them adequately, then LSU has a legit BCS shot in 2011.

Not this coming year as a true freshmen, but people really haven't given Mickey his due because of his lukewarm feelings towards LSU. He's a very good DT prospect.

I see him rotating with downs, brockers and freak. With copeland at fb, not sure if ego plays at de or dt. D line looks stout for years to come.

This is the biggest question on defense to which we need an answer. I am looking for him to step up and claim his place. And you are right on about Baker and Francois...they need to take the next step.
If CJ Johnson had committed he very likely would have been on the field for LSU next year as a true freshman...playing for SEC and National Championships. Oh well...his loss.

Ive heard that ego could be staying at de. What about logan moving inside? Either way i would like to have an 8 man rotation on the line. Meaning we can swap at least one guy out at every position if we need to. Have 4 guys at DT and 4 guys playing end. I know at end we have a lot of diff looks with adams, edwards, montgomery, aghayere, mingo, ego, logan and allen.

Please elaborate. I understand every year teams lose starters at some position. What do you think are our biggest holes? By patching them adequately do you mean with current players on the team? Do you mean with current recruits that have not committed, or with current committments that have not signed? I am only asking cus you used to give very good info on this board, so I know you know your stuff.

I think the loss of Sheppard at LB will be the most noticeable drop off. This seems to always be a weak spot for LSU but I have faith in Chavis to have the linebackers ready to play. The Vols always had solid LB's when Chavis was there.

Thanks for the response, but I wasnt asking you. And yes i know losing shepp will hurt, but people kept saying they didnt think shepp is going to be able to step up, and he did. So why cant minter or any of the other lbers step up? If this is indeed where Lynxcat sees holes.

i disagree. dt is the key. if you have a couple of dt's eating up 3 o-linemen. the lb runs free. minter is a good middle lb. if this occurs, people will be happy. when o-linemen were able to get to k.s. (ark, au, and some atm), he was neutralized pretty well.
i see brokers being the space eater. logan, downs, ego and freak will get a shot at rotating based on down and distance. hopefully, the light comes on for davenport. he has the big body that can eat up blockers. m.j. may get in the mix with his power, i just see him and thomas r.s.
we have a number of bodies at dt. we just need that penetrator who commands a double team or a space eater who does. this will put the d.e.'s one on one and the lb's to run free and make plays.
dt is always the key position on defense. everything else is effected by it. the dt who commands a double improves the pass rush because the d/e's are one on one. this helps the cb's so they don't have to cover as long. it helps the lb's to run free on running plays.
bama was a good defense last year. however, w/o cody, their sacks went way down and their secondary was exposed.

A "hole," per se, is typically used in reference not just to replacing players, but key players and team leaders--Nevis and Sheppard in this instance. Sure we have bodies that can fill in, and probably fairly capably, but I think Lynxcat's primary concerns lie in filling the quality, leadership, and experience of the position that we lose there. It seemed pretty clear to me.
