I was reading the thread someone started about Chris Jackson. A poster commented about the enthusiasm that surrounded the PMac, and now... well...not so much.
Some contribute it to Jackson, Shaq, etc. The fact of the matter is this... Dale Brown was the main reason for basketball's popularity in Baton rouge. I don't think he gets enough credit.
Yes, I was fortunate to see players like Chris Jackson, Don Redden, Shaq, Dwayne Scales, Ethan Martin, Ricky Blanton, Vernell Singleton. But I was even more fortunate to witness the Dale Brown era! That's the point here guys. He gave us the magic. Like him or not... I credit Dale for my LSU Basketball Golden Years!

Actually Dale is the reason it sucks now. Remember that whole probation thing surrounding Lester Earl? That was Dale's doing.

I saw the first game he coached at The Assembly Center and could tell even back then he was going to be fun to have around. A few weeks later he showed up at my house and presented me with a new net for the basketball hoop on the roof. Sports is entertainment and he was PT Barnum personified.

as much as I complained about Dale, we never had a sustained BB program since he left.

Dale was a great recruiter, not so good coach. His teams were widely viewed as underachieving. Everyone love Daddy Dale but anyone who tells you otherwise is full of shite, is too young, or has no memory.

And in the whole state for that matter. I first met Coach Brown when he did a whirlwind tour of random high schools and tournaments in '72. He had a real passion and vision to popularize LSU basketball in the state. I'd say he succeeded in spades. Very down to earth guy who just loved to talk basketball. For the better part of two decades LSU was generally considered one of the top 20 basketball programs in America. Amazing to think about that now. Something we may never see again.

I was so lucky to attend LSU during the Chris Jackson/Shaq years. Even though football was sucking, the basketball was awesome.

Remember Loyola-Marymount?

It started long before CJ and Shaq.

Dale Brown was a big disappointment. LSU should have won a national championship with Chris Jackson, Shaq and Stanley Roberts.

Dale Brown was a decent coach but a very enthusiastic one, and the PMAC during those days reflected that enthusiasm. A great coach would have done far better but Brown was better than anyone LSU had had up until then and just plain fun to be around. He was the right man for the time.

He's the reason i got into LSU basketball and NCAA ball. Loved his camps....very inspirational speaker and great man. I ran home from school instead of ridding the bus to avoid all the other stops so i could get home in time for the game tip offs when the tourney started. I miss Coach Brown.
