In response to the other thread about the MLB, I thought it would be interesting to discuss just the NBA.

Personally, I am not as overly excited about the NBA this season as I have been in the past. That is probably because I feel somewhat cheated that the players are all "buddies" who would rather "gang up" than compete with each other. But that's JMHO.

Are there any other reasons? The blatant influence of officiating in the playoffs?

I haven't seriously and passionately watched the NBA since Jordan retired the second time. I am not a fan of some of the rules like defensive 3 seconds and traveling being widespread and uncalled.

I really do agree with this. From the way he has been coddled and pushed down our throats by the league and ESPN. to the way he has tried to make a "super team" is turning me off to the NBA.

What's sad is that the class of 2003 had a chance for greatness and they have have slowly ruined the league,

All the pre-season hype died pretty quickly. It will pick-up close to the playoffs. That many season games combined with the fact that too many teams in the play-offs makes these games so uninteresting.
Christmas day was fun.

They need to cut the schedule a little, maybe only 1 interconference game for each team, and definitely make the 1st round of playoffs best of 5 again.

I think the NBA is strong in the major markets and weak everywhere else. My biggest problem with it is it seems like no one tries during regular season games until the last 5-10 mins. In the college game, most players go all-out for the full 40 mins.

My biggest problem with the NBA is that they have completely changed the rules to favor the offense.

I mean, you basically can't touch the guy with the ball in that league now. It isn't basketball.

A 70 or so game regular season and best of 5 opening playoff round would be a lot better. All these interconference games are lame, who wants to see the Bucks and Warriors play twice?

Completely agree. College b-ball is far more entertaining to watch.

You just described the NFL perfectly.

David Stern would disagree, this was the most anticipated NBA season in a long time.

That, too! Maybe just the PI rules and the ongoing crackdown on nasty hits.

Shane Battier said back in April they should have a 58 game regular season, play everybody home and away.

"There are too many throw away games in the NBA regular season. For anyone who’s gone through an NBA season, they know it’s nearly impossible to go maximum intensity for all 82 games of the year just because of the grind and the travel. I think the game suffers because of that."

I would keep the divisional setup the same, just maybe 1 interconference game per team and 2 interdivison games.

Stern and the league making money has little to do with the game as a whole IMO. Something like 25 teams I read are losing money now. Ask almost any basketball fan that was old enough to watch the 80's thru Bulls NBA and they will tell you todays game sucks in comparison.

As SFP said in the baseball thread, the financial difficulties in the NBA are caused by players being grossly overpaid and the ridiculous guaranteed contracts. It's not really a popularity issue

You don't think your declining interest could have anything to do with the obvious decline of Kobe Bryant?

Another reason the NBA has lost some of its appeal is because there are too many teams. Lebron mentioned contraction and he was frowned upon...but truth of the matter is that some of these teams don't have the star power to get you excited to see them...
