Beautiful fall like day hiking around the Mendenhall Glacier today. Temps in the upper 50's.

My wife took this picture at Amalga Harbor, a harbor about 26 miles from downtown. It's taken at the "Salt Chuck" a small freshwater lake separated from saltwater by a very narrow ledge of rock. I didn't notice the fisherman at first.

Nice as always.
I'm on the Eliot glacier at Mt. Hood. Probably at about 8500 feet. Lots of crevasses but they weren't as deep as normal because of the late snow. Could hear stuff moving and melting beneath us at times.

Right? It was amazing. You can still the damage from Helens blowing up. As you know, the pic doesn't even come close either. Was ABSOLUTELY amazing!

You got some great pictures, thanks for posting.
How hard a climb is Mt. St. Helens? (ie length and altitude gain) I'd love to do it some day, maybe next summer.

Thanks.
Depends on how conditioned you are. It's a strenuous hike. When I went in June we had no choice but to start at Marble mountain sno park due to a lot of late season snow. Road to climbers bivy was snowed in. This adds a few more miles round trip.
Starting at the climbers bivouac is about 5.75
miles and 4500 ft elevation gain. That is the monitor ridge route. Both routes are awesome.
When you go, be very aware of the cornices. Stay away from the edge by ten feet. Typically, people watch others and make a line for those who don't know. People die there by getting too close. Also, if you don't have snow pants bring heavy duty garbage bags to glissade down on. Very fun! You can glissade about 3k vertical feet, and it makes going down very quick. I don't do it but snowshoes are helpful for some and there are places to rent those from. Regardless I would bring trekking poles. Makes walking on snow and scree much easier.
Permits are 22$, it's also good for a day of parking and camping overnight. They only issue 100 permits a day during the summer.

Thanks. That is a pretty stout hike. I've done more strenuous ones but it's been a while and not on snow. 3k vertical feet of glissading has to be pretty awesome. There is a good chance we'll get up that way next summer as part of a road trip, hope so.

What's that they're catching?
Posted on 10/7/11 at 4:23 am to Boats n Hose
They were trying to catch flounder but seemed to be catching bullheads. It's from the N. Douglas boat ramp a couple miles from my house on N. Douglas Island.
