my gus malzahn manifesto

i will admit it. i have a man-crush on gus malzahn and think he'll be an exceptional head coach wherever he gets his shot, and i pray its at LSU. heres why:
i think the days of a CEO-type coach are dead. if you look around the country, the elite coaches are experts on their respective side of the ball: saban, meyer, chip kelly, bobby stoops, mcbrown**, tressel, petrino, patterson. all of them either call the plays/ schemes, or are very involved and have their hands all over that side of the ball. the lone exception is mack brown. i consider him the anomaly b/c its texas and they are shelling out $1M/yr+ per coordinator.
the last few years at LSU, we have has our hands tied b/c our head coach doesnt fall into this category. miles is an offensive guy and our offense has really struggled the last 2 years. its either: miles' offense, crowton's offense whom miles keeps around, or its somewhere inbetween where miles meddles in the offense. i dont know which one it is. everyone speculates its one or the other and i simply dont know- and i dont think it really matters which on it is- its an indictment on the miles he hasnt hired someone good enough to run an offense for LSU
now, what happened in 08 was kinda the opposite. the offense was pretty good, even with all the pick-6s, and the defense was awful. miles put malveto in charge, it didnt work, it was fixed by "allowing them to find other jobs." heres the main point: if the HC is in charge of one side of the ball, you are only trying to fill 1 top end coordinator, not 2. its half the trouble. it makes hiring a staff easier b/c the coordinators are not a revolving doors with people being successful and moving up, or coordinators failing and getting whacked. this is still a problem, but its half the headache. its my feeling we should get ahead of the curve and have the foresight to get out of the "CEO" head coach while we can.
this is why my "top 5" list only includes people who fit this category: the pattersons, malzahns, pelinis, ect.
i am fully aware that in malzahns case, his lack of head coaching is an issue. i see the risk in it, i really do. hes only been in college coaching for 5 years, but i think hes been uber successful at every stop and hes been under 3 different head coaches, so he has it done different ways.
gus malzahn is a good leader, he recruits, kids love playing for him evidenced by getting a gatorade bath after the SEC championship game. hes a workaholic, no nonsense guy. but he also likes running trick plays and has fun on the football field. i truly believe if we hired him and kept chavis to run the D- he would come in, right the ship offensively, and we would be filthy good. think auburns offense this year, with LSU's defense.
cue everyone bitching its too long...

and then theres my argument that big time SEC coordinators have faired pretty well when theyve gotten their shot at a big HC gig: bobby stoops, jimbo fisher, will muschamp(jury is out on his HC abilities, but he was given the keys to the florida and almost got them to the UT castle, so hes pretty highly thought of), chizik is debatable- but he is in the BCSCG, bo pelini, dan mullen, charlie strong.

I applaud you!!!!
Finally, a bit of sanity to the board!!!!
Gus is going to be great when he get the opportunity to be a HC. We need to lock him down and STEAL HIS TALENT FROM A HUGE RIVAL!!!!!!!

i would prefer that our head coach actually have head coach experience. There is a lot more to running a successful program than just being good at offense and going out to recruit. He has no experience at making the clutch decisions and has no experience to draw on when in a clutch do or die situation. Malzahn is not a top tier d-1 coach. Please stop pushing this issue.

If Gus wasn't a former HS coach... He'd already have a major HC gig. He constantly changes his O to fit his players. That's what makes him so good. IMO, he'll be the highest paid head coach in D1 within 5 years. Might as well jump on him now.

Wrong. There is no comparison between Saban's reputation at Michigan State and Malzahn at Auburn. Not even close.

Malzahn is a big name this year. Schiano was a big name a few years ago.

1995 Michigan State 6–5–1 4–3–1 L Independence
1996 Michigan State 6–6 5–3 L Sun
1997 Michigan State 7–5 4–4 L Aloha
1998 Michigan State 6–6 4–4
1999 Michigan State 9–2* 6–2 did not coach bowl
so saban was 34-24 at michiagn state and 0-3 in bowls. sounds like an elite coach to me...

dude do not sit here and try to draw a comparison between the resume saban brought here and Gus' current resume. That is just an awful comparison

He'll be the highest paid after he wins a BCSNC at LSU.

FWIW, Malzahn in more in charge of that team than Chizik is. Heck, Chizik frequently asks Malzahn if they should call timeout, if they should go for it on 4th down, etc. Not only would Malzahn be a good offensive mind, his departure from the plains would seriously hurt Auburn. And we'd probably get Keihl Frazier to sign with LSU as well.
I'd take Malzahn before Pelini.

Gus' HS head coaching experience:
quote:
Malzahn got his start as the defensive coordinator at Hughes High School in 1991. He became head coach in 1992 and in 1994 Hughes reached the state championship game with an upset of Pine Bluff Dollarway. Hughes fell just short in the title game, losing to Lonoke on an interception in the final minute.
Malzahn's success at Hughes and his wide-open attack landed him a head coaching position at Shiloh Christian in 1996. From 1996-2000, he transformed Shiloh Christian into one of the most dynamic offensive prep squads in the nation. In 1998, Shiloh Christian set a national record with 66 passing touchdowns for the season, while quarterback Josh Floyd nearly set an individual national record with 5,878 total yards (5,221 passing, 657 rushing).[2] Malzahn guided the Saints to back-to-back state championships in 1998 and 1999.
In 2001, Malzahn took over for legendary coach Jarrell Williams at Springdale High School. Malzahn continued the rich tradition of the Bulldogs’ program. He led the program to two state championship game appearances in his last four years, winning the title in 2005.
Malzahn led his squad to the state title game in only his second season in 2002.
The Bulldogs lost a hard-fought 17-10 decision to Fort Smith Southside. Springdale was on track for another state title game appearance in 2004 before Little Rock Central sidetracked the Bulldogs’ title hopes in the state semifinals. Springdale was upset by the eventual state champion, 31-20. The Bulldogs finished the season at 12-1.
Malzahn's 2005 squad at Springdale went 14-0, easily won the state’s Class 5A championship, outscored its opponents 664-118, including a 54-20 victory over West Memphis in the state championship game, and was consistently ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation.
Included on the championship team were prize recruits Mitch Mustain, Ben Cleveland, Andrew Norman, and Damian Williams who all eventually joined their coach at the University of Arkansas. Offensive tackle Bartley Webb decided to leave the state to play for the University of Notre Dame.
