does anybody knowledgable in recruiting know why in the world is Freak the #1 ranked DT but a four star? The top 28 DT's according to rivals are 4 stars so basically 1-28 are the same.

If they were all the same they wouldn't be ranked 1 through 28.

He's a 6.0 4*, so he's as close to 5 as you can be. I'd be shocked if he isn't bumped up after the all star game practices. I'm expecting him to feast on some 5* OL and get his due.

they are all 4 stars is my point not 1 5 star DT is odd considering that DT is one of the most important positions in CFB

This is the only year on record where the #1 DT isn't a 5 star.

Rivals' explanation of the numerical scale system with the "star" system:

The ranking system ranks prospects on a numerical scale from 6.1-4.9.

FIVE STAR
6.1 Franchise Player; considered one of the elite prospects in the country, generally among the nation's top 25 players overall; deemed to have excellent pro potential; high-major prospect

FOUR STAR
6.0-5.8 All-American Candidate; high-major prospect; considered one of the nation's top 300 prospects; deemed to have pro potential and ability to make an impact on college team

THREE STAR
5.7-5.5 All-Region Selection; considered among the region's top prospects and among the top 750 or so prospects in the country; high-to-mid-major prospect; deemed to have pro potential and ability to make an impact on college team

TWO STAR
5.4-5.0 Division I prospect; considered a mid-major prospect; deemed to have limited pro potential but definite Division I prospect; may be more of a role player

NOT RANKED/EVALUATED
4.9 Sleeper; no Rivals.com expert knew much, if anything, about this player; a prospect that only a college coach really knew about

has anyone seen freak or la'el play in person, are they the real deal or not? I saw K. Frazier the USA offense player of the year play and he wasnt just awe inspiring. He was good no doubt, SEC caliber, but not amazing. (might have just been that game though)

There is still one more update to occur. Rivals usually has 30-33 five stars. There are only 17 right now, IIRC.

Exactly. It doesn't matter if he's the #1 DT. If he's not one of the top 17 overall players (at this moment), then he's not a 5 star. He will be once they update, unless he drops below the top 30 overall players...which ain't happening.

Because he is not verbally committed to Alabama. If he would change is committment to Alabama he would get his fifth star the next day.

I guess we should see Cyrus Kounadjio pass La'el Collins as the top OT in the new rankings in January, right?

Freak Johnson is one of the best DT prospects ever, fwiw. Makes Chris Davenport look like a 3*

Come on. You and I both know that's a tag you never want to put on an incoming freshman. He can never live up to the hype, no matter what he accomplishes.

Just like saying Clowney is one of the best DE prospects ever

I expect Freak to contribute from day 1 tbh. He's that kind of athlete.. and i'm not talking about physical prowess. He's mentally ready, I think.

I think he should be a 5 star, but not just because he is the #1 DT. 5 star status should be based on talent, not ranking.

it is ranked on talent. iirc there were no 5* QBs last year.. or it may have been the year before

last year sims and heaps were the top 2 qb's and wern't even in the top 50

Freak should be 5 star right now, I think he's one of the top 10 best in the nation this year but he will end up getting his 5th either way once rivals updates.
