Time to let go of this term. D-1 football players are "paid" employees of the college. They get a 1 year contract for playing their sport. If they're good enough, they are renewed for another year. Their contract pays them roughly 12 to 15,000 a year in bartered benefits. Any idiot who works part time can earn 10 dollars an hour. Compute the hours the football players "work for their programs and extend the pay @ 10 dollars an hour. Ther're getting ripped off. The university banks on athletes love of the game and the glory of game night to entice young men into this job.
Cheating is un-acceptable in academics. Cheating is called "just business" in the work world.
The players have NO gaurantee of completion of their contracts except excelling on the field. Wonder why some are compelled to cut corners?
Academia needs to find another line of work if they resent athletes "free" ride. They can always strap on a helment and work for 10 dollars an hour.
Les Miles is hauling in 3.5 million a year from the university...85 athletes are earning 1.275 million in bartered benifits from the university. If the profs resent the implacation that athletes are living with a silver spoon in their mouth, they should picket the field house and ask LM to fund a seat for a year.

Schollies are worth more than 12-15k, FWIW

lets not forget the training and development they get for free. This is imperative for them to get to their ultimate goal of playing in pro sports. if you play for the likes of Stanford that worth about 60k a year if you red shirt thats 300k in 5 years. not to bad uh

What about all the future benefits they will receive from having a college education ???

This depends on the school.
If you also add in the cost of personal training, use of the facilities, cost of the football skills that they are taught etc if you had to pay for it on the open market.
A scholarship is worth much more than that

Benefits in pro sports only effect less than 5-7 athletes a year per class in Major NFL producing schools. For the other 20 athletes per class, what lasting benefit do they get for the use of the facilities? And I do believe you can attend LSU for both semesters full time for about 15,000 inc room and board. So, the value received for 1 year of service- possible professional football training for the fortunate 5 or so not included, is pretty accurate.
The degree received by the athletes is of no greater value than then one receive by the standard student. Oh, I forgot the free Medical care to repair the ACL or Torn rotator cuff that the student won't receive.
I stand by my statements. The athletes should be paid and paid well for their income producing talents and should pay their own costs to attend college, just like everyone else.

Try not to stress out too much over the holidays man. No offense, but you getting worked up over something you will never be able to control is meaningless.

That doesn't make the degree any less valuable.

No they shouldn't. Just like you said only a few guys make it to the NFL, only a few guys are really big money makers. Most of the time fans are going to go watch their school play because it is their school. Not to mention, most schools don't make money on athletcs. So paying these players more than what a scholarship would cost would not be better for them.
