Blame it On Stringer

it seems on the basketball post everybody gets a pass except stringer, 15ppg and 3ast as a freshman is probably alot of more productive the most freshman guards in this country, now defensive he has been a liablity and makes some of the dumbest fouls ive seen, but he is definitely not the only freshman that hurts us defensively(derenbecker) but everything about Matt is positive "o he'll be good later" "he has to get use to the speed". Stringer went 3/4 lastnight with 1 turnover in 20 minutes, and we lost by 20, seems to me the offense should be geared more to getting him shots, he's been the leading scorer on the team and the offense is geared to get the ball to two players that have been mediocre at best (storm, white) what kind of sense does that make?
Stringer and Turner are the best players on the team, so why isnt our offense going thru them, lastnight night all stringer did was pass and run opposite like Chris bass has be doing for years but stringer is no cris bass and if the coaches use him like bass u are wasting his talent, The reason Turner went 4/16 is because stringer was not aggressive and getting turner his catch and shot opportunities which meant he had to try to create his own shot and we saw the results.
And from my understanding stringer wasnt even the main recruit we wasnt expecting stringer to be our leading scorer and what not, Derenbecker was suppose to be the player to watch, and was going to be so versatile and ive been watching and i dont see it, The real problem is our upperclassman that are not doing anything period

Stringer, Turner, and Derenbecker all have alot of learning and growing to do.
Stringer reminds me of D.Mitchell in a sense. He's a shooting guard in a PG body. But, TJ is teaching Stringer to be a PG and rightfully so.
All 3 of these guys will be good players, their just a year or so away for now.
So what you will see is both good and bad play. When it's good, LSU will have a chance to win. When it's bad, we're screwed.

derenbecker is severly limited due to his lack of speed. I agree with the consensus that he has to get used to the speed of the game, but unfortunately speed is not teachable. Hopefully, derenbecker is quicker than he has shown to this point, if not, he will likely never be a significant contributor.

His defense SUCKS! He does not even slow down the opposition. He looks like an 8 year old that tosses his shoulder into a player as they blow past him. D-Beck needs to learn how to get low and move his feet! That dude is slow!

Stringer has better handles.
He'll get better over time.
I think he is going to be a very good player before he's done here.
Turner is a guy that you can run the offense through. He's the best of the freshman as of now by far.
This team will eventually take a pretty drastic turn upwards at some point. It's just going to take time.

I agree on all of this. I'll also add that Derenbecker is going to be a good player. Yes, he's having trouble with the speed of the game. Some of that may be his lack of quickness and some could be that he's having trouble mentally as well.
I mean, both Turner and Stringer have trouble with quickness at times as well. I believe that's mental as well.
I especially agree with your last statement. At some point this team is going to show real signs of getting it together. It may be this year during the SEC. It may not happen until next year. But, it will happen. You can see it, although you have to look really deep sometimes.

I think he can be a productive offensive player at this level down the line.
However whatever he brings offensively I'm afraid he'll give up as much or more defensively.
Sure you can improve some defensively with footwork drills, technique and film study but I just worry his cieling is pretty low on how much better he can get defensively.

He doesn't have to be great. Just serviceable.
Also, in most cases it's about Team defense. This team is sorely lacking in that right now.
Last night, they all looked like poor defenders.

Matt was recruited primarily because of his shooting ability and overall court presence. Thus far, his shot just isn't falling so it really magnifies his defensive deficiencies. He is capable of catching fire offensively and that's why TJ keeps putting him in. Let's hope he starts hitting sooner than later.

The poster discussing TEAM DEFENSE nailed it. That, along with rebounding, remain our two biggest weaknesses. We rely on true freshman to match veteran teams shot for shot and that simply isn't reasonable to expect. Until we defend better as a team, and stop overextending ourselves on the perimeter as Dotson continues to do, we will continue to lose these games and play down to inferior opposition. UNT wasn't inferior. They were a veteran club that is a tourney team that i just better than us on every level. It's unfortunate but this is the team we have. I was more optimistic to start the year, and while this team shows individual flashes, they are not a good team right now, specifically on the defensive end. Until they figure that aspect out, they'll lose to most teams.

why blame it on our freshmen when our jr's storm and white aren't showing up?

Oh I agree. I have had issues with Trent's man defensive philosiphy in that regard since he's been here.
I will say I've seen better defensive rotation this year in some games than any since he's been here.
We took 3 charges in the first half against Memphis. I don't know if we'd taken three combined in the 2+ years prior.
But teams will isolate Matt and take him every chance they get.

i have a problem with trents hate for zone defense. id like to see us at least try something other than what we are doing

Actually one of the more impressive things I've seen from Trent coaching-wise was that by the end of the year last year we were actually playing some effective zone defense.
He's a man-to-man coach, which I would be to were I a coach and coaches like to stick stubbornly with their systems, sometimes to their detriment.
But last year he had no choice, called around to folks like Beoheim and others about how to play zone. At first we didn't run it well but by the end of the year we were zoning pretty darn well.
Trent says he's hesitant to zone this year due to issues rebounding and other things, but I think he should throw it in here are there just to get teams out of rhythmn.

honestly we cant rebound any worse than what we do right now. I know he is a man to man coach but at somepoint you have to do what we did last year and go to a zone for just a little bit.

I don't understand why Trent Johnson would call Jim Boheim about how to play zone defenses ? TJ is a division one basketball coach . If he calling other coaches about how to coach zone, we got the wrong fricking guy coaching our team. Lets go after Jim Boheim then. I don't call other meteorologists about the forecast for Louisiana. I know enough to make my own. I am responsible for my own work. TJ needs to get this program moving.

TJ definitely deserves some criticism, but not about this. Coaches do this all the time, in all sports.

This..I actually think it's one of the better strategic things Trent's done here. He's a man-to-man guy. I have my issues with Trent but that ain't one of 'em. If it's not your specialty go to a coach whose specialty it is and learn.
Boeheim plays 2-3 zone exclusively.
