This has been the most frustrating situation year end and year out for LSU. Louisiana does not produce great linebackers for some reason, and LSU has never landed a 5* LB and very few 4*'s. This year, just like last, LB is our glaring hole in the class. What the hell gives???

You know what Kelvin was ranked? 3 star
You know what derrick odom was ranked? 4 star

Ej kuale-- 4 star
Luke sanders-- 4 star

Who was the better linebacker while at LSU?
Stop looking at the stars man.

All I know is the Randle kid coming in looks like a blazing 5 star to me.

Brady James
Faulk
Shep
H tower

and on and on and on.....

Screw the stars. Linebackers than totally dominate high school are usually guys who just reached maturity earlier and are superior in siz, speed, strenght....but they don't get much better once in school.

THen you have the 3 stars that were rising at the end of high school and who get bigger, stronger, faster once in college (mature later) and they end up becoming a better player than the 5 star.

The trick is for recruiters to be able to judge this and offer appropriately.

And LSU does that well.

I get your point, but this is just 4 in the last decade. I agree with the OP, it just seems like we get less than our fair share at the position (worst than all positions besides maybe QB).

keep in mind that Chavis likes smaller faster LBs. He'll convert one or two DB/ATH to fill the void and what he looks for in a LB every year.

Not to mention we run 5 if not more DBs a lot. We often substitute nickel and dime guys in for LBs. In the run heavy situation we often add DLs not LBs.

Don't we have a potential 4 star lb already committed for 2012? And another in state lb at Dutchtown (possibly the #1 ranked player in the state in 2012) looking at LSU?

But I agree, I wish we (LSU) had produced more all American home grown linebackers.

2012 could change your perspective quick!

I agree with you!! i'm tired of these projects and guys that can't find the football if their life depended on it. We should be able to grab two or 3 a year from Tx if La is down on LB's(which is usually the case). Sad when in the last 10 years LSU has like 3 Lb's make all SEC. Can we ever land a true freshman stud that can start from day 1. Our Lb & OL play over the last 5 to 6 years has been the biggest weakness on the team.

LA. HS coaches play LBs at RB & have for a very long time now.

Certainly this is sarcasm or a troll thread.

Our LB's have been good the past two years. Chavis is a hell of LB coach if anything.

Good thing we didn't offer that 3* Kelvin Sheppard from GA. He didn't do much. Well, if you count All-SEC I guess he's okay.

There are more, I just wanted to show the OP that 5 star doesn't always mean they end up the best. I named a few recent that everyone would know. I'm sure there are lots more.

With what Chavis accomplished with KS in just two seasons, I bet the recruitment of lbs will start to improve dramatically.

Darry Beckwith 4* recruit from Parkview. 2008 Butkus Award Finalist, and the #9 LB in the nation.

Stars don't always mean everything. K Shep wasn't that highly rated.

State is weak in LBs almost every year and Chavis isn't exactly a great recruiter. Great LB coach but not a recruiter.

You could say the same about Tennessee while he was there. That state as a whole produces about as much D1 talent as John Curtis alone. They didn't have a problem getting stud LB's though.
