That's awesome, I can't stand Blockbuster. They can't come up with any original ideas of their own so they try to piggyback netflix and redbox.

Although actual Blockbuster stores will continue to get these releases early, this will do nothing in their fight against Netflix and Redbox. Between Netflix's awe-inspiring Instant Watch and Redbox's omnipresence at seemingly every service station and grocery store you walk into, venturing out to your local understocked Blockbuster (usually staffed by people who know jack about movies) just feels mighty inconvenient. Although the loss of jobs is certainly sad, it's hard to feel bad for a corporation that did its best to destroy just about every knowledgeable mom and pop video rental store in the country.

I really liked this part of the article.

Here you go.

Someone please take that shovel away from Blockbuster, because the hole they keep digging for themselves is just getting deeper and deeper.

Fast Company reports that the Blockbuster Express kiosk system is quickly losing the "28 day advantage" that allows Blockbuster to rent certain new releases to customers several weeks before Netflix and Redbox could. They've already lost that exclusivity with 20th Century Fox and Universal, but now you can add Warner Bros. to that list. This will prove financially painful for the company now that there's less incentive for people to seek out Blockbuster kiosks instead of Redbox (the kiosk system was specifically created to counteract the growing popularity of Redbox) because everyone will be getting releases at the same time.

It will also be pretty embarrassing, since Blockbuster's entire post-bankruptcy marketing strategy has centered on their four-week advantage over their competitors.

The reason for the loss of this advantage is simple enough: NCR, who operates Blockbuster's kiosks, realized that it would be significantly cheaper to wait that extra month before stocking new releases and struck a deal with Warner Bros. to go ahead and wait those extra 28 days. The original story has all the technical details for those of you who want to know all of the business ins and outs going on here.

But what does this mean for you, humble movie fan? If you've already devoted yourself entirely to Netflix and Redbox, it means nothing and you can go about your merry way. If you're a regular Blockbuster customer, it means you may have to wait an extra month to rent certain new releases -- and unless someone pulls Blockbuster out of this grave it's digging for itself, you may need to start looking for other ways to watch your movies.

[via Movieline]

UPDATE: Interestingly, the Blockbuster Express system has less connection to the Blockbuster company than we thought. This piece from The Consumerist goes into detail about how the NCR owned and operated kiosks have been trying to distance themselves from the bankrupt company. What if NCR goes as far as to remove the Blockbuster name from their kiosks? Talk about adding insult to injury. Thanks to Tyler Foster for sending that link over.

I've seen stuff like this said a lot on this board. Why do so many people here hate blockbuster. I'm young, and my parents always handled the blockbuster and video rentals for most of my life, so I don't quite understand the hate

Neither do I, although Blockbuster today is certainly nothing like it used to be.

Why do so many people here hate blockbuster

- arrogance
- using late fees to run their business (thats like the local government using parking meter 'violators' to fund the city)
- driving mom & pop places out of business
- suck arse expensive movie selection
- using their market dominance to broker backroom deals with the major studios to prevent other competitors from having an equal chance

so blockbuster can eat a bag of dicks. they have reaped what they have sown. its LOL funny given their dominance (using those tactics above) how they've become a humongous shitpile now

For me, it was the whole late fees debacle. About five or six years ago they made a huge production of "NO MORE LATE FEES" with commercials and a big campaign. Then, less than a year later, they very quietly changed their minds and starting charging late fees again. I think that pissed a lot of people off.

Now, they've put together this huge campaign of "28 DAYS SOONER" and now they have to eat their shite again.

I can't say I hate them but it is interesting to watch them implode into nothingness when they probably could've saved themselves years ago.

I remember the days of when new films or games came out that were hot they would normally have a wall of these titles and would have a "guaranteed in stock" policy and when they didn't have it you got a rain check slip for that title for free on your next visit. I can't tell you how many time I got to rent certain games/movies for free because they were all gone. You go into Blockbuster on release date of a film now and they have 5 The Dark Knight Blu-Rays there. Pathetic.

lol, I think their minds were made up for them by the huge lawsuit that was filed against them (and successfully won).

Nope. They were doomed from the day Netflix came into existence. Their debt load from building stores would never have allowed them to be competitive with Netflix. They simply have too much debt to have the same pricing structure as Netflix.

Hate is a strong word, but I quit using Blockbuster when I had the Movie Pass several years ago. It was great, but every month it seemed, I'd go in and they'd raise the price of the Movie Pass by $3-5. After they did that the third or fourth time, I just cancelled my subscription for that. In my 5 years of using Netflix, the fee has been raised only once and it was minimal.

Agreed on the No Late Fees comments. They changed their late fee policy at least 4 times in the last 2 years and never bothered to tell anyone. I got rang up for late fees on a 5 day rental by returning it a day late, when the customer service guy at the counter said you get an extra 5 day grace after that. They changed the rule in the 5 days I had rented it and refused to acknowledge it.

Also, BB has limited selection with certain production companies. They got into a pissing contest with Universal and Universal decided they'd only send them the bigger movies. So, if you wanted to see something lesser known from their catalog, you were shite out of luck. I was told that by a BB employee, so, no I don't have any link for that.

Blockbuster sucked balls anyway for the true movie connoisseur. Their selection has been crap almost since inception but in the last ten years when they removed over half of the space in the store for movie sales, video games and food, the selection became an outright joke.

I'll tell you one reason I hate BB.

3 years ago when I last visited them. I returned a movie then 3 months later I received a collections notice stating I owed Block Buster like 110 dollars.

I immediately drove to the store and asked wtf was going on. They HAD the movie in stock I had returned. It was never checked in. No phone calls were made to me at all to say anything was late. Calls I had received before when I actually was late on a title. The only notice I had was from a collections agency. Thats fricked up. I had to get BB corporate to remove the entry on my credit report and I had to raise all levels of hell for them to do so.

All this was even during their "NO MORE LATE FEES BS" too.

They had that unlimted rental for a monthly fee which seemed promising too. Then one day they decided you were to be limited to x in store rentals per month AND went up in price.

To hell with them.

I used them years ago and developed a hatred for several reasons:

1) punitive late fees (sometimes fraudulent ones that they would not refund)
2) edited movies (took me a while to realize some racier things were removed from some movies i rented from them)
3) they steadily jacked up their prices

Definitely the most obnoxious thing was the % of their profits that were based on nailing people for stiff late fees.

IMO they had a corporate policy of handing those out even when movies were returned on time

As soon as I figured out what Netflix was about - that was the obvious choice
