1988 Saints Season

Lost by 1 point in the first game of the season to the 49er's, reeled off 7 straight wins, beat the defending AFC Champion Broncos 42-0, finished 10-6 and missed the playoffs.

I may constantly forget the year, but I will never forget listening to Jim and Archie on the radio. Despite the Dome Patrol totally shutting down Montana, Rice, and company, the game was still in doubt because Fourcade (
) could not get the Saints in the end zone and settled for 4 FGs. Finally, with little time on the clock, Montana began to methodically march the Niners down for the winning FG. In my nightmares I still hear Archie saying in shell-shocked horror: "I don't believe it, I don't believe it..."

I hated how back then every time the Saints got inside the 40 they ran three times up the middle and set up the FG.

I was at the game too. I never dreamed the Saints would lose their next 3 and miss the playoffs. Oh, the days of collapsing and waiting for the disaster to happen as it always did. Now the Bengals and Lions can enjoy that.

My first Saints game as well...I was only like 6, but I remember the Eric Martin juggling catch to make it 42-0...
