Fantasy Football: All Luck?

I say 75% luck. A lot of perennial losers will say 100%. The most used term on my league's board this season has been "crapshoot".
What say you?

It's not all luck, but definitely the most lucky fantasy sport of the big three.
I say 60% luck for football
25% luck for baseball and basketball--that's just to account for injuries

Not all luck
More luck involved than basketball/baseball though

Well one has to play matchups and set lineup so it can not be all luck.... You need to be lucky that the players you picked will perform but many do a bit a research into teams/players to know who will be consistent.

10-team league and for the regular season my team has the fewest total number of points for and against. I'm also ranked 3rd overall. I'd say 100% is about right.

This crap happens, but is not the norm. For the most part, those who score more win more.
Luck is a factor, but good fantasy players win too consistently for luck to play more than a 40-50% part.
It does play a bigger part now than in the early days of fantasy football because info is too readily available for the slackers.

55% luck
45% skill (knowledge)
45% skill (knowledge)

i think it is in a lot of ways, but I really think that it's something you can be really good at too. It takes a lot more work that people are willing to put in, and without the effort the 'luck' factor comes more into play.
I've done it for four years now and my first two years I never sniffed a playoff appearance and barely finished over .500 in any league. I didn't have any strategy in my drafting and picked up players on whims or because of their names. I constantly bitched about bad luck/injuries...etc
The last two years I've busted my arse and have absolutely killed it. In my 6 teams these last two years I'll go into the postseason as the #1 pointscorer in 5 of the 6 (all 3 this year) and a first round bye in the same number. Now I hear others bitch about luck and am in the boat that you can prepare for bad luck (to a point).
Freak injuries in the 1st qtr, a 0 from one of your stud WRs, going up against a RB who has a career week can all frick up a given week but over the course of the season you should be able to make things work. Playoffs of course are a different animal with that one week being everything.
So yes, I did want to brag in this thread, but I also don't think that it's as luck based as a most think. It sure as hell isn't 75% luck.

Points you score= good skills. Points u give up, obviously luck. I'm second in my leauge in points scored, but .500 in head to head match ups. Kinda sucks.

I would say it's 60 percent skill and 40 percent luck. Obviously if a player gets hurt then thats bad luck but the skill is if you had their handcuff.

anyone can attain the knowledge so therefore there is no advantage for anyone and it comes down to luck
Posted on 12/6/10 at 5:40 pm to mla0003
People that do research and strategizes right is not luck.

that's ridiculous. Anyone can attain the knowledge to become the world's best chess player.
There's TONS of fantasy fb information out there to be learned and lots of it is wrong. It's being able to set your own strategies after finding out what works. There's always going to be luck to a point, but it can be minimized.
I think the closest comp in the conversation should be competitive poker. So many people insist it's luck and gambling, while the best stay the best on a consistent basis.

i know, i was just using the points the folks in my league make for it being all luck. i think its more than that and thats why i always win
Posted on 12/6/10 at 6:03 pm to mla0003
nothing I like more now than going into a draft and hearing people talk about luck etc...

if you enjoy what skill is involved in fantasy football, you need to get into some serious fantasy baseball and basketball leagues. It's a whole other level of skill, research, and strategy

I hate basketball so i refuse on that but I might try to get into hockey next year. I will definitely do baseball when I retire, too weird for me to do now.

I would be curious how many actual MLB players do fantasy baseball and then pick themselves.
Posted on 12/6/10 at 7:03 pm to tduecen
I know a few who do it but I don't think that they pick themselves.
