Simple question:
Do you think Jenny died with HIV/AIDS? She's sick, but no one can figure out what she's sick with, and the end of the movie is right about the time that the epidemic started.
If the answer to the above is yes, what about Forrest and Forrest Jr.?

But they got married. Did they not eff on their wedding night or anytime between the day day they were married and the day Jenny died?

I am no expert on HIV/AIDS, but I don't think there is any guarantee a guy will get it from a female. In fact, I believe the odds are really low for a single encounter.

I read the book but don't remember much.
I always assumed AIDS.

I believe in the book its called a virus but its not specific.

It certainly wasn't cancer because it was something the doctors weren't sure of.
Signs in the movie certainly point to HIV, but that would be pretty depressing as it would then probably have spread to Forrest and potentially, little Forrest.
It could have been some rare virus that the doctors couldn't figure out. I had a friend of the family die in the early 90s of a rare disease that took the doctors years to diagnose.

I always assumed it was AIDS considering all the drugs and being a whore. There was a needle in the scene where she got on the ledge.
Because she said "they don't know what it is."
What year did she die? I'm sure it's on her headstone at the end. Because, for some reason, I just thought it was before they knew what AIDS was......back in what? The 80's?
I'm going to have to check that out.

I'm going with HIV/AIDS...Especially considering the time in the movie when her death took place, the unknown of what the disease was back then, and, as others have pointed out, her being a druggie and a free love chick.

Yeah, when she got it, it was around the time they didn't know much about HIV...I always assumed it was HIV

The baby doesn't get infected with HIV in every case. I think it is about 1/2 the cases

If Hiv, that would be too much of a downer as Forrest would likely have picked it up from her after they got married and little Forrest would also likely have it.
It was probably just a rare virus that doctors didn't know much about. There are still plenty of viruses out there that doctors have difficulty diagnosing even today.
