from 1989 - 1994?

I ask this question because even though I was a student at LSU from 1992-1997, I was in Tiger Stadium when LSU lost most of those games, and I still don't understand how it happened.

Easy answer is Archer and Hallman were terrible, but 6 straight losing seasons? At LSU?

In hindsight, it just doesn't seem possible.

Very little talent at all positions. No defense whatsoever. No leadership due to lack of coaching. Thank God for Tulane am Miss St.

You answered your own question but to add to it...Joe Dean's hiring of Hallman. The Archer hire wasn't bad, it just didnt work out.

Mike Archer was a good man, just the wrong hire

Curley Hallman was the fricking most evil person ever born.

Have a great day

Per Wikipedia, this says it all.....I never knew this. The guy (Curley) couldn't even win at the High School level......

quote:

Hallman continued working at the college level as a position coach and coordinator for another decade, with stops at SEC schools Alabama and Mississippi State. From 2004 to 2007, he served as head coach at Muscle Shoals High School in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. His first season at Muscle Shoals resulted in a 3–7 record. At the conclusion of the 2007 regular season, the Muscle Shoals Trojans had compiled another dismal 4–6 record, their fourth straight losing season under Hallman. On January 14, 2008, the Muscle Shoals Board of Education accepted Hallman's resignation as head coach. He was replaced at by former head coach of Cordova High School, Scott Basden.

Success requires investing money and authority in the right people doing the right things. The folks that brought Saban on board and bought into his agenda finally figured this out.

Hallman was helped out at Southern Miss by a certain QB named Brett Favre, who pretty much carried that team on his back.

I can't believe there were no better options than Hallman at the time...

A simple reason, the LSU Board of Superviors got rid of Coach Mac. The most Stupid mistake LSU ever made. It took Coach Saban to right the ship, and The Mad Hatter is just keeping the ship in the right direction. (No more Hallman or DiNardo)

I think Bill Arnsbarger started the decline. He could really coach but could not recruit. He won with Jerry Stovall's players and then left the cupboard bare for Mike Archer when he left to go to Florida. It took a long time to recover from that and along with Hallman's hire, things went South

Bad coaching hires, terrible facilities, and AD more interesting in counting pennies.

Some admin needs to resurrect the epic Liberty Bowl thread, explained a lot of the issues.

lol what?? You could argue he is one of LSU's best 3 coaches of all time. Look at what Archer did riding his coat tails before the program really took a nose dive with Hallman

Even those who lived through the era (when Brodhead was forced to resign and Dean was hired) don't realize how much LSU athletics was a good-ole-boy enterprise back then; rife with corruption.

It seems hard to believe now, but even as recently as the eighties, it was.

wow, please exaplin how pushing him out after the 1979 season lead to a run of bad years starting in 1989? We were 10-1-1, ranked #5 in 87. Before that 9-2-1 in 85, 9-3 in 86. Won SEC titles in 86 and 88. When was Macs last SEC title? 69 I think. We had a very good run in the mid 80's after Mac was gone. He had run his course and it was time for him to go. We'll never know what Rein could have done. Stovall recruited well, but was not a great coach. Arnsparger coached those guys but wasn't interested in the long term. Dean with his bad decisions is what hurt the program.

We had an inept, parochial AD and we hired buffoons. During that epoch, LSU was run by a group of local good ole boys who had no business managing a Piggly Wiggly, much less a division one football program.

Joe Dean is the reason. All the good hires at LSU were by Brodhead -
Bertman, Henry and Gunter.

Arnsbarger could not recruit, he saw that the talent level was down, so he left. Arnsbarger was a complete waste.
