Cannon's run question...

Were any of you at that Halloween 1959 game who may remember in what direction Cannon returned his famous 89 yard punt return?
On TV it looks like he caught it on the South end and returned it to the North end. Correct?

Don't know but every time I see that run...I laugh. Football has come a long way. Seems like he ran that play in about 40 seconds flat. Did anyone have speed back then...

If the pressbox was always on the west side, which I believe it was then yes the film shows him running right to left (south end to north end)

i wasn't there. my dad was. it has to be south to north b/c they would have filmed that from the press box, which would have been located on the west side.

I didn't see it but was told it was South to North. I always watch for the "extra referee" who found his way onto the field and ran down the sideline with him. He got in the game because he brought a ref's uniform with him and no one questioned him.

We joke about that, but the old film does distort the reality of the situation.
One, I believe it was a pretty sloppy field.
Two, Cannon's fastest 100 yard dash was a hand-timed 9.4. That converts to about a 10.37, electronically times 100m. While that's not setting the world on fire, it would be comparable to what most of our skill athletes would run. Also, Cannon carried some size and lots of strength with that speed - over 6' and he played at LSU at about 205 to 208 pounds, though he played a little heavier in the pros.
He was an exceptionally gifted athlete for his era. Cannon would earn a scholarship today. He would not start (except possibly at safety), but could play backup corner, tailback or H-back and would still be able to return kicks.

In the 50's cameras were set up in the press box. That will gice you the answer.

If you would look at the opposing teams bench as he ran the punt back there would be no question in your mind he was going south to north. LSU team has always sat on the west side.

Cannon ran south to north along the east sideline. As to how fast Billy was, nobody in college or high school ran him down from behind.During his era, he was the best.

I was there in the south upper deck directly above the visitor section near where the tunnel is. He got the ball in that corner of the field and ran north.

I was there actually. It was my first game in Tiger Stadium. I was my first college football game. In fact it was the very first game I ever witnessed. I was barely eight years old. Honestly I do not recall which direction he was running. All I remember is how loud it was.If you look at the video of the replay you will see that Coach Vaught is shown and is he is on Cannon's right hand side. To my knowledge the visitors have always occupied the East Side of the field. So by deduction he was running South to North.

I was there - I was sitting in the north end zone in line with the east hash marks.
He definitely ran south-->north.

I was only four(4) at the time. On the radio he ran from right to left, as I recall. By the time I was in the second grade, I was able to touch his Heisman at Charlie Hennigan's camp touchdown in Bryceland, LA.

A friend of mine's father played on that team.

Cannon ran the world record holder Bobby Morrow at the texas relays and ran the same time 9.4 in the 100 YD dash. He also ran the 220 Yd Dash and ran the final leg one both the 100 and the 220 YD relays I think he only placed 2nd in the Shot put....He was 15 lbs off the Olympic record in the Military press.I dont think he was ever beat in the 100 Yd. Dash in the SEC

one of my top three moments in tiger stadium was when they played the video on the big screen of him running it back... and cannon was standing in the south side where he caught the ball... i got chills.
I wasn't born when it happened so i guess that is the next best thing.

Anybody that was at that game does not know how to use a computer. Secondly, Cannon stepped out of bounds ::covershead:

I was there (not really) but I know about 2 million people who were there- seems like EVERYONE says they were there, many who weren't even born yet. Everyone who says they were there should take a lie detector test, because the people who claim to have been there far outnumber the number of tickets sold to the game...

I was a boy scout usher in the south end zone. After the Cannon run, Ole Miss had first and goal from the 4 yard line. The white team was put in and Cannon and Johnny Robinson both were on the 3rd and 4th down tackles on Jake Gibbs that stopped Ole Miss. Those are the facts. Had the Rebels scored, the loss and the 89 yard run would have diminished the lore that remains today. It did not rain during the game, but the field was wet and the night was humid.
