Thought number one: population density.

I threw these numbers together for a post on the MSB, so I figured I'd use them to ask the question here. How much population density is necessary to support an MLS team? Also, this makes the assumption that a team would be able to pull from all of these areas.

This would work much better after we have the figures from the 2010 census, as these numbers come from different time periods. These numbers come from Wikipedia, too, and I did not check their sources.

1st level - GNO, North Shore, BR, River Parishes, Houma, Thibodaux
New Orleans MSA (2010 estimations) - 1,235,650
Baton Rouge - Pierre Part CSA (2009 est) - 809,821
Houma - Bayou Cane - Thibodaux MSA (2000 official) - 194,477
Hammond ìSA, Washington, St. James Parishes (2006 est) - 179,428
TOTAL: 2,462,876

2nd level - Lafayette, New Iberia, Alexandria, Gulfport, Biloxi, Pascagoula
Lafayette-Acadiana CSA (2009 est) - 546,834
Alexandria MSA, Natchez ìSA (2000 off) - 199,622
Gulfport - Biloxi - Pascagoula CSA - 396,754 (2000)
Picayune ìSA, McComb ìSA, Brookhaven ìSA (2006 est) - 145,119
Avoyelles, La Salle, Catahoula Parishes (2006 est) - 67,865
Marion, Covington, Wayne, Walthall, Lawrence, Jefferson, Jefferson Davis, Green, Wilkinson, Franklin Counties (2006 est) - 150,973
TOTAL: 1,507,167

3rd level - Mobile, Meridian, Hattiesburg, Jackson
Mobile - Daphne - Fairhope CSA - 591,599 (2000 off)
Hattiesburg MSA, Laurel ìSA, Meridian ìSA (2006 est) - 324,119
Jackson - Yazoo City CSA (2006 est) - 557,385
(I'm not doing all of the counties and parishes for this far out)
TOTAL: 1,473,103

Level 1: 2,462,876
Level 1+2: 3,970,043
Level 1+2+3: 5,443,146

Are 5.5 million people enough to support an MLS franchise?

How about you answer the question of what level of population density is necessary to support an MLS team? Otherwise, frick off.

It's a stupid fricking question to begin with... Seattle has a metropolitan area of just over 3mil, and they have the best fans in the league.

Columbus is even smaller than Seattle, with arguably the second best fan base.

Miami has a Metro population more than double Seattle and three times larger than Columbus, but they had their team taken away.

NO is never going to have an MLS team.

Read it again. What part of the question in the title of the thread asks about New Orleans? The question is about the growth of the league. There will be a 20th franchise, at least. The question is what areas would be capable of supporting the team.

I used those figures as an example since I'd already dug them up for another post.

Even if it wasn't a NO should have an MLS team thread, my point is that population density is not directly related to the success of a MLS franchise.

So it's still a stupid question

Plenty of Hondurans. NO has one of the highest Honduran populations of any city in the world.

New Orleans already can't support the Hornets and I'm sure there are more bball fans in NOLA than soccer fans...

NOLA can't support an MLS team, if that's what you were hinting at.

The "best fans in the league" thing is totally arbitrary as is. Seattle is good, though I hate them, Toronto is good, DC, Chicago, (ugh) Columbus...population has no correlation with passion.
