Crowton needs a QB that throws like Lee, and runs like Jefferson.

Obviously, even combined they are woefully below average. . .but below average is an improvement over what we have.

If Lee could run the read option as well as Jefferson, Mauck, or Flynn?

Championship.

Jefferson isn't that good of a runner.

How many options did McElroy run last year? We need to adopt that offense, it fits perfectly with this team.

No this team needs a DC like Chavis and an HC that can guide the team toward a minimally competent offense.

Once upon a time, we signed a highly touted recruit. He was the nation's number one dual threat quarterback according to just about every single reputable recruiting service in the nation. By "dual threat," the recruiting services meant a QB who could...run...and throw. Exactly the type of quarterback you are now positing.

His name was...Russell Shepard.

Hmmm, I wonder what ever happened to him? Too bad he never became our starting QB.

Depends on the comparison. He has improved dramatically in that area since last season.

He may not be Pat White, but he is considerably better at it than Lee.

Judging by JJ's throwing motion and accuracy this season, I would say that ALL JJ did in the offseason was work on the read option.

I don't know that you can say AT THIS TIME that Lee cannot be an average QB in the SEC. Due primarily to picks (which are a big deal), Lee has not established himself as an average-above average SEC QB, but he has also played only one game this year and a little more than one last year. Based on the TN game, you can see that he will still put the ball in harm's way and still throws off his back foot sometimes, but he also completed 16/23, showed good accuracy on short, intermediate and deep throws, and made some VERY clutch throws on 3rd and 4th down. Sure, I would love it if he were a better runner, but let's give him some time.

Why, exactly, do we need the option?

That ship sailed when we kept Crowton after last season.

Most QB's in the country are better at running the option than Lee. However, Jefferson isn't a good option QB. Not sure if it's play design or play execution, but how many times do you cringe watching Jefferson pitch the ball?

He must not have worked at all then.

I saw him making the same mistakes vs. UTk that he made in 08.

Don't get me wrong, I would fricking LOVE Lee to become the shot in the arm that LSU's offense needs. . .but what I saw while at the game on Saturday has me terrified of UF's defense.

And what I saw out of JJ in the first month has me terrified of LSU's offense.

Are you serious?

That is the only thing Jefferson does well. Don't let hate cloud your objectivity.

Do you mean to tell me that Jefferson runs the read option well? Does he run any option well? IMO, he decides whether there is a handoff, pitch or keep before the ball is snapped.

I am not calling for JJ to play over Lee. I have been quite open about where I see the QB situation right now.

Lee should get most of the snaps, with JJ as the change-of-pace QB for certain play packages.

Actually, yes.

He does not run the outside option well, but he has been money on the read option.

i don't know if RS could take the pounding of the SEC, but i damn sure would like to see him play qb some. the big problem i see is that if they aren't going to let him throw EVER, then the D is gonna have a pretty idea of the play before the ball is snapped. it started happening with RP and even he threw it on rare occasion (TT's 1st Td as an ex.). but toward the end, crowton put RP in and he ran only the read option with him keeping the ball almost all of the time. it's crowton, i say. he's the problem. instead of mixing our offense up with JJ, it should be with RS and let him throw it sometimes (at least safe passes). our OC is stuck in time; he has x amt of plays and plays them according to his personnel pkgs in the game. we need fresh blood and someone who will give this team it's identity that corresponds with the talent of the players on the field.

JJ is not a good runner period. He doesn't run the option well at all and he is slow....
