Always wanted an AR... which one and which options?

Local gun shop had a "run of the mill" AR.
.223 caliber & .308 caliber versions.
Options for stands, lights, lasers, sights.
What would you get... and why?
ETA: Caliber typo

I really want an AR too. I'll probably get one for Christmas next year (AK this year).
I'm going to go with the .223 and probably the most basic one they have. I want a 16" barrel and I'll customize it from there.
Figuring on putting a forearm grip, picatinny rail, collapsible stock, EOTech sights, and maybe a detatchable Surefire light.

Give us a budget and we can steer you in the right direction. The skys the limit when it comes to these types of black rifles.
I would suggest a base model AR in 223 caliber. Removeable handle and a 16" Barrel. Adjustable stock. M&P / Bushmaster / Rock River are good place to start looking if your budget is in the 800-1200 range.

Not really a budget limitation. It would just take longer to save the money, but as a hypothetical range, call it 1200 - 2200 and see what that can get you.
I would be more inclined to set a value limitation. I wouldn't mind spending more money if the return was worth the additional investment. What's the point of buying a $4k AR when the $2k version does the same thing?
What's the arguement for getting the larger caliber?
What attachments are recommended, needed, or unnecessary?

Are you setting the rifle up for a hunting platform or Zombie Invasion? This is critical to know what accessories you will need.
Also how often are you planning on using / shooting this one?
One the upper end of your range I like the LaRue Rifle( it has a rail system already built into the gun for all your after market stuff). Its a really nice quality gun and the quality inspection is a 1 to 1 ratio. Unlike other brands that may be a 100 to 1, or 50 to 1 inspection ratio.
With that said I own a bushmaster and had zero issues with it. I don't shoot it a ton so I didn't really see a need to buy a top of the line model. If you are going to get into competition style shooting it may be worth the extra 1000 to buy a upper end brand.

I would use some of the money to get a .22 upper. That way you can shoot for cheap.

I have a Rock River Arms AR in 5.56mm
RRA Elite CAR UTE2
If I could have a "Do Over" i would have gotten a DS ARMS .308
Mini SA58 FAL OSW Rifle
The next rifle I get for zombie / hurricane / all around utility will be a .308, I may even get a suppressor for it. The 5.55 if truly suppressed with subsonic rounds is a glorified .22

What is your reasoning behind the "Do Over"?
Although I do fear zombies,
I think it would be hurricane / utility type.
... With an outside chance of needing to fight back commies.

5.56 round just has serious limitations for any application not associated with plinking, varmints, or people.
I purchased an AR specifically for Hurricane seasons. In case of civil unrest I want a weapon that almost all LE officers will be carrying. I also chose the AR so if I am standing outside my house in Black BDUs and Black Rifle in hand, I appear to be a cop or LE to a potential Looter. Standing on your front lawn with an SKS or AK immediately identifies you as a civilian.
I like the additional range/firepower of the .308 and just consider it a more useful round for what I would ever "Need" it for.
That being said, I would most likely buy a piston action AR and not a gas impingement AR if buying an AR at this point.
I am by no means an expert on ARs though. There are several people that post on here that know much more than I do about them. When they post, you will learn much more than I can tell you about them.
Like I stated- I wouldn't even own one if not for the fear of lawlessness and desire to defend property during a hurricane or civil unrest/uprising.

A good ole 22 is enough fun for plinking.

I think for most people its the next step you take after owning an AR in 223. It makes you want the AR on the 308 platform.
Or if you would buy the AR in 308...you would want an AR in 223.
Close quarters type situations the 223 will do what ever it is you need it to do. If you want more long range knock down power than the 308 is where you need to start.
If i was going to buy a 308 i would look hard at the FN SCAR...

Why are people afraid to just say "I want one cause the fricker is bad arse".

I've looked at them. I'm kindof partial to a gas piston system as opposed to the gas impingement system.
I had a Sig 556 ordered after Obama was elected but had a hard time getting one in and when it did come in it was about $300 more.
If I were buying right now I would have to look at the something shooting the 6.8. Barrett Rec 7 is an awesome system.
Also, the H&K MR556A1 would be on the list.
There are other cheaper versions as well.

The FN SCAR 17 is LE / Military only???
can civilians buy this rifle yet?
SCAR and $$$$
I see a couple of sites that have them for sale.
$2500-$3400.
What is the 600 at the bottom of your picture? Did you purchase one for $600? Or does that number signify something other than price? Thanks.

sorry for my ignorance, but if i was building one, would i have to just buy an upper and lower section and combine them? would that be the basic pieces needed to build my own? thanks

In theory, this is correct. The parts are "Modular" and designed to "plug and play" with other manufacturers.
I know people went and bought 6.8 uppers in the 2004-5 time frame, but couldn't get ammo.
I was one of them. Traded the 6.8 upper for the RRA linked in earlier post.

So what you're saying is... just get both.
