M1 Garand

I'm looking to buy a M1 Garand, but I am unfamiliar with the models. I really just want it for recreation. Is anyone on here familiar with these guns or have recommendations on a model to go with?

You looking for one made during WWII or a Modern Version like the ones Springfield makes.

I would say the modern one that Springfield makes. I wouldn't mind a WWII area gun but I feel I would be less inclined to shoot it as much since it would be sort of a collectors item.

The civilian marksmanship program will ship one to your door no FFL required. Just have to belong to a cmp affiliated club and have participated in a marksmanship related activity. They have guns starting at $595 on up to around $1k. Only thing I have noticed about the garand is that the original ones can bend an operating rod with modern hunting ammo due to the pressure. They sell an adjustable gas plug to correct this but it has to be fine tuned to the load you are shooting. I bought a Garand from a local gun shop a few weeks ago for $695. It is an import gun. Meaning it is WWII surplus loaned to a foreign country then reimported. It has a 1945 receiver but a 1960's dated barrel from Taiwan. Have not shot it yet.

If you are going to go with the Modern Springfield Version I like the scout squad and the M21 Tactical.

I think you guys are confusing the M1 Garand with the M-14 (what springfield armory sells as the M1A)

The Springfield M1 Garand Cal .30-06 is the one I am looking for. When I looked at a gun show they had several sizes/models. I will probably just have to hold and look at several different ones to make my mind up. That CMP has several models but no pictures to match the models. I'm at work and can't search for guns because of work filter so I will look at it when I get home.

We are Bayou....but when you want a modern rifle on a similar platform you dont have alot of options.

The rifles at CMP are all the same exact model gun just different quality grades due to the age of the rifles. The do offer a rebuilt Garand for $995 using reconditioned receiver, new barrel and new wood furniture. They only made one M1 Garand, no folding stocks, or different barrel lengths. The tankers you see for sale with short barrel are some that were put together with parts kits, many with reweld receivers. No GI was ever issued a cut down version of the Garand.

As far as a new Garand you only have one maybe two options and they will be expensive. If the wife wouldn't kill me I would love to have a Springfield M1A

You can check out www.gunbroker.com . They always have a LOT of people selling these, its basically the Ebay for guns. I've done a lot of buying on there. They have just about every option of M1s available on there to check out.

Thanks I was curious about that. I will probably go with one from CMP then. Thanks for the help.

If you look at the bottom of the CMP page they explain the grades they sell. Mostly what they use to separate them is muzzle and throat erosion. Also they have a correct grade that has all parts from the same time frame(only for collector value not function). If the one I bought doesn't shoot that well I may look into buying one of their new barrels. Should make a great iron sight deer rifle only thing is the safety is a bit loud at least on mine.

If you're buying one new, an M1A is a better rifle.
And there is really only one version. The stock goes out to the barrel end, so you can't really shorten it. Every one I've seen looks substantially the same.

There are different manufacturers though, and this does affect the price somewhat.

I just took my arsenal refinished m-1 garand in for some work. Works great now.

I basically just had a gunsmith give it a thorough cleaning and they replaced the operating rod spring with a newer one.
I have never had any problems shooting commercial ammo.
