Im looking for some decent squirrel hunting in south louisiana. This past weekend me and a few other guys went to Sherburne WMA and didn't see a thing, squirrel or rabbit. Maybe we were in the wrong spot, (we hunted off and around the Dixie Pipeline @ Big Alabama Bayou)but I was wondering if...

a.) there is a better place to try in Sherburne
b.) another WMA around the Baton Rouge area with decent squirrel and rabbit hunting.

thanks

They are definitely out there... It has been really dry lately so its hard to sneak up on anything in the woods - find some oaks and be willing to sit for a while. Me and a buddy hunted this weekend in Maurepas Swamp - took 5 squirrels between the two of us. If you are looking for some areas around BR - I hear Tunica Hills WMA is good as well as Joyce WMA. I plan on hunting Tunica this weekend.

Cat Island NWR looks rather promising.

Great place with big fox squirrels but steel shot only and believe me those suckers are hard to kill with steel and the vegetation is still to thick for a .22.

I imagine they are pretty hard to kill with steel. The hide on those dudes is pretty tough. I think non-toxic shot is required on all federal refuges no matter what you hunt.

Just thought about Pearl River WMA. It's a solid hour and a half from BR, but I bet it's pretty good.

All squirrel hunting is going to be hard right now imo. Unless we get some rain. You have to get out there before daylight and get under some trees with nests in them. Then when they get moving around you can bust them.

you're right. I may be going to tunica tomorrow on the south tract. Let yall know how I do. Scouted it last week and it is some tough terrain. Anyone check out the north tract?

Talked to someone who hunted Livonia over the weekend and said they limited. He also said he hunted yesterday and it was too windy.

I'm going Saturday and Sunday. It's so dry it's going to sound like I'm walking on corn flakes. A nice shower or two would do wonders, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen before this weekend.

You stay in one place? I never stop walking, slowly- unless I knock one down. Then I always stay still and many times get a second, sometimes a third.

Was out all day last saturday and did nothing but walk. Didnt see crap. Late in the evening when they were getting back in the nests and I was leaned up against a tree is the only time I saw anything.
Im not saying you wont kill anything walking, I just think its so dry its relly hard to kill them right now. Not only because of the noise, but it just doesnt seem like they move as much when its dry.

Yeah, we were constantly walking...we would walk down the pipeline, and then head into woods a few yards, and then move further down...didn't see a thing, and only heard a few.

The best place I've found for a sure-fire limit on squirrels (public land) is Sabine Island Wildlife Management Area in Vinton, LA.... Call and reserve a cabin at Niblett's Bluff state park...launch your boat and drive it around to said cabin...head out early in the morning anywhere in Sabine Island and limit out....Good times

The wind this weekend was rough. If the wind lays down this weekend you may see more. I've never hunted the Tunica WMA, but I have hunted in that area and they have plenty of hardwoods, which means they should have plenty of squirrels. If I were picking a WMA to go hunt squirrels at, it'd be Tunica.

Well went this afternoon starting around 330. Worked down a dried up and sandy riverbed. I am no expert, but I would definitely agree about it being too dry. Heard a few. My compadre saw a couple, but neither of us could get close enough. Not only are they hard to sneak up on, but they don't seem to be moving much. There was an intermittent breeze that didn't help either. I would venture a guess that even a seasoned squirrel hunter wouldn't have done well in these conditions. I will definitely wait until we get some rain.

I'm going squirrel hunting this weekend, but it sounds like I may have to hunt doves instead. I'm starting to notice more-and-more birds in the area after this recent cold front passed through.

This place was good pre-Katrina but due to the number of trees that got knocked down its a zoo now and impossible to walk. Decent hunting if you float the river though.

Tell me more about Cat Island?

I'm going try to shoot a few Saturday morning. We hunt close to the Maurepas WMA. I'll let you know if they're moving there. I plan on sitting in my deer stand where I saw about 200 last year and trying to pick a few off.

The most sure fire way of locating squirrels is to simply bring the wrong gun or go deer hunting. Those smart bastards know when you pose no threat to them.
