PP7 and Woodson: What it may take to win the Heisman

First, what did Woodson, the only defensive player to win the Heisman, do to bring home the trophy?
From Michigan site on Woodson:
Woodson's 1997 Stats
Defense
47 tackles (5 for loss)
1 sack
8 interceptions (7 ret yds)
9 PBU (passes broken up)
Offense
1 pass completion (28yds)
5 rushes, 41 yds, 1 TD
12 Receptions, 238 yds, 2 TDs
ST
Punt Returns - 36, 301yds (8.7yd avg), 1 TD
Total yds - 615
Total TDs - 3
Looking at what happened in Woodson's Heisman year and assuming that similar numbers could do it for PP, here's what may be needed for PP to win:
* A great season by the Tigers Michigan won the title in 1997, which helped Woodson's cause. Voting happens before the BCS title, but winning the SEC West would be HUGE for PP's chances.
* Huge performances against Alabama and Arkansas - Woodson's signature game came against #4 Ohio State, their biggest rival. If LSU is unbeaten when Bama comes to town, Gameday will be here and all eyes will be on LSU and PP. Beat Bama, then the Arkansas game may be for the SEC West title. A huge day by PP to close out the season would be fresh on the voters' minds.
* Media Hype - That ball is already rolling, but it needs to build throughout the season. He's already on the radar, which is essential.
* Offense / ST - It will take a few plays on offense, IMHO, to realy solidify his chances. He will not need a lot of snaps, just enough to make the highlight reel. An average of 3-4 offensive plays/game over the remaining games should do it, provided they get the ball into his hands. A TD pass FROM PP out of the Wildcat would net a TON of style points. Continued video game type numbers in the return game would also be essential. He already has Woodson beat in that category!
* No clear-cut offensive candidates - Needs help here. If Denard Robinson has an injury or splits time at QB, this helps (not wishing an injury on him). Winning the Bama game could help in head-to-head versus Ingram. Even with a great season, if an offensive player from a top 10 team (like Pryor at OSU) has huge numbers, it will be tough for Peterson to win.
* Continue dominating defensive play - Chavis is moving him around, which could help his chances for INTs if the QB isn't sure where he is. An INT return for TD is coming!
Stat Comparison through 4 games (Woodson's numbers in parentheses)
Defense
Tackles - 11 (47) NOTE: PP avg is 46.5 last two seasons, which would be right there with Woodson
Sacks - 0 (1) - Needs 1 to match
INTs - 2 (8) - Needs 6 to match (behind pace)
INT Return - 46 (7) - already passed Woodson
Offense
Pass completions 0 (1 for 28 yds)
Rushing 0 (5 for 41 yds, 1 TD)
Receiving 0 (12 for 238 yds, 2 TDs)
ST
Punt Returns - 14 for 253yds, 18 yd avg, 2 TD (36 for 301yds, 8.7yd avg, 1 TD)
Kick Returns - 6 for 190yds (0 KO returns)
Total yds - 489 (615) ahead of pace
Total TDs - 2 (3) ahead of pace
From Michigan site on Woodson:
quote:
Charles Woodson didn’t win the Heisman Trophy because of his defensive abilities. He should have, but he didn’t. Woodson won the 1997 Heisman because of his highlight kick returns and receptions to go along with his breathtaking interceptions. Had he stayed on the defensive side full-time, there would’ve been no way he would’ve won the award as the voters just aren’t that progressive.
Woodson, as a freshman, shut down Buckeye star WR Terry Glenn and he picked off two passes. In the 1997 Ohio State game, Marching toward the National Title, Woodson was the difference staying on the field for 83 plays in the 20-14 win over the No. 4 Buckeyes. He clinched the Heisman with a 78-yard punt return for a score and his interception in the end-zone snuffed out a late Buckeye drive.

Thanks. Good info. I also think that if LSU's defense is considered one of the best in the nation, then PP will be considered to be the lynchpin of that defense and will get a lot of credit.

No doubt it could happen. Love that he doesnt give a shite though. That is the best part.

Great comparison. Thanks.
It's going to require LSU going undefeated for Peterson to get an invite to NY. After that, it's circumstantial. Woodson proved that there's a huge Midwest bias in Heisman voting. Peterson would need two Midwest candidates to split votes (Pryor maybe?), AND he would have to come up with big numbers.
Big numbers + best player on best team + no clear-cut Midwest offensive challenger = PP7 Heisman

Yeah it's obvious that the most important thing is the team winning, which is badass. I'm glad he is owning it though and both he and Miles have acknowledged it. The hype machine will keep gaining steam if this continues and he gets more interviews on TV while ESPN keeps talking about it.
we have to keep winning though. it's crazy that our disappointing offense will help his cause if we keep winning games "bc of him". his touchdowns against UNC and WV are the difference in both games

you dont actually buy that he doesnt care do you?
Posted on 9/30/10 at 11:25 am to WelcomeToDeathValley
No, he cares. So should we. The Heisman is a big deal for the team as well as the player. BUT, if LSU doesn't kep winning, PP7 won't win the Heisman.

He also needs a moment. Solid games against good teams just wont cut it. He can have a great game returning punts and kicks against ala, ark, fl, etc, but he needs to run one back, or have a game clinching interception. He could have 2 sacs, 3 broken up passes, and an int with 100+ return yards in one of those games and still not win. One thing needs to be remembered that sticks in the mind of the voters. Cant overlook the impact of a "moment"

PP will have lots of opportunities for his moment with all the big games left on the schedule. He needs to be the difference maker in games like bama and florida.

Definately. He's had one with the pose last week, but he'll need a signature play or two during the BIG games to stay ahead of the pack.

Woodson won the Heisman because of his game against Ohio State - plain and simple.
If Peterson as an INT, shuts down Julio Jones, and takes a punt back in an LSU win over Alabama, he's got a shot.
The one thing Peterson has going for him is that, unlike 1998, there is really no outstanding Heisman contender coming into the season.

we need Robinson to struggle against real teams which I expect to happen(he's played 3 of the worst defenses in the NCAA in the first 4 weeks and a 1-AA team).
We need Pryor to struggle mightily in a loss(such as what happened to Locker and Mallett).
I think if it comes down to Peterson, Ingram, and Moore. Peterson will win it, but if Pryor or Robinson make it to New York, it isn't good for PP.

The key to Woodson winning the Heisman was ESPN. All season long they replayed Woodson's highlights and Peyton's mistakes.

That's why I think it's important for him to get an offensive score or two, particularly a pass. That would show just how dynamic he is as a playmaker.
