With it being tax-free weekend on guns and me getting paid today, I've decided to buy a gun. I'm looking for a decent .22 rifle. Just something to take out to my girlfriend's property and kill rats and do some target shooting with. I've been out shooting dozens of times, but never purchased my own. Anyone have any advice? TIA.

Thanks. One more question. If I'm not a Louisiana resident, can I buy a rifle here?

Ruger 10/22 is one of the best and most sold guns ever. By one of the combos with the scope already mounted. You can get them at Cabelas around $220.

I think you can, but when you fill out the FFL your information must match your drivers license, even if you do not live at that address anymore.

You have to be a resident of a bordering state. Texas, Mississippi or Arkansas. That's what the law was about 3 years ago when my friend from Tenn tried to buy a gun in LA.

Just dug through all the laws. This appears to still be the case. Oh well.

The are certain states where you can but a longgun in Louisiana. Most residents of southern states can buy a longgun in Louisiana, except Florida residents

If you want a pistol you must be a Louisiana resident.

Also, you can buy a rifle or shotgun at 18 and have to be 21 to buy a pistol or a pistolgrip shotgun.

If you just want a .22 to play around with and are not too serious about modifying it, then it is hard to beat the Marlin Model 60 in Stainless Steel.

If you want a gun to play with and modify then the 10/22 is the best gun out there

Unless you're giving the marlin away it makes no sense to buy one. The 1022 is as good or better in every respect.

If I were going to buy a 22 rifle I would buy a Browning 22 Automatic Belgium made like the one below.

You can also buy this same rifle made in Japan and it will be cheaper.

You will probably have to go to a gun show to find one of these that was made in Belgium or to a gun dealer.

The Jap is also a great gun and will last forever.

you can never go wrong with anything made by Browning.

All you need is a current LA resident to purchase the gun, if you are not elgible to do so this weekend. Maybe the GF can purchase it, with your $$.

If a .22 is what you want, then no doubt the 10/22 is the way to go.

Good call. I'll round up the GF and convince her I need this to protect her or some shite like that. I'd assume she buys it, registers it, then transfers it to me?

You need not register and transfer a long rifle in the great state of LA. If you were to buy a used gun from your neighbor for cash, crops, sexual favors, etc. there is no paperwork to process. The federallies will never know how many guns and which ones are in my house, vehicle, trousers, etc.

Have her simply fill out the paperwork when the purchase is made. They ask a question if this firearm is intended for someone else's use. The simple answer is "no". It is the same thought process if a father buys a small caliber for his son/ daughter.

The laws written are written for the criminals. Law abiding gun owners are only burdened by them. While you're buying the 10/22, go ahead and buy several more while you're at it.

What you're describing is called a straw purchase, not only is it illegal, it's a felony for you and your girlfriend. After a felony conviction and a stint in prison, you'll never touch another gun again.

Getting on a public forum, being ill advised to commit a felony, then admitting your intent to commit a felony isn't very smart.

Have your GF buy her on .22, for herself, and down the road if she doesn't like it, buy it off of her.
