I'd love to get into alligator hunting. What all is involved with it?

Mainly, you need property. Then DWF gives you tags.
Or I think you can put in for a lottery to hunt public areas

Yeah someone on here posted about a lottery system for the WMA tags. Land owners can apply but I think you need close to 100 acres per tag depending on the type of habitat you have on your property. My grand ma used to get two tags for the broken marsh she owns on the Grand Caillou side of Lake Boudreaux. You probably can't find any gators there anymore it has gotten so salty.

I saw an 8' gator in Bush Canal last month. I think it depends on the winds and rain. They're close for sure

I will never forget the stories about my great grand paw on my mom's side. He trapped them before they had tags and would go into the swamp when it was cold and find them hibernating. He said they would bump your leg up to the surface and when they would surface he would wack them between the eyes with a hatchet. I remember being little and my mom translating those stories for me. He died in the mid 80's and never learned english.

Most definitely. They didn't have all the PC bullshite protecting cajuns in the 40's and 50's and kids were punished for speaking french in school. My grandmother had to stay home from school till she learned english. This led to them not teaching their children the language and now our culture mostly lost. My children won't even know what it is like to hear someone speak cajun french.

My dad told me of how they used to hunt them with hatchets/hammers. He said they would stand in the alligator hole and one would pull the gator up while the other one would whack it. shite on that, no telling how big the gator could be that you are picking up.

Yep, my dad used to hunt them in the 50's with a light and a pirogue behind Pilottown (island south of venice-can only get there by boat). He would shine them then pull up to them with the .22 and pop them underwater. I would be scared to do that now also.
He got flipped over in the pirogue once by a 12 footer that he thought was only 6 foot. He killed him but the gator started flipping when he shot and flipped the pirogue over.
