I still do not understand any justification for those out of staters bitching about this. You have absolutely no leg to stand on and the fact this program existed is utter stupidity.
Legacy things are stupid. Plain and simple. If you want to get in state tuition at LSU live in Louisiana and pay your taxes. If you chose to leave the state to make more money or get away from the corruption, thus bringing almost NOTHING back to the state outside of you going around acting like a cheerleader, why should the State do anything for you?
Again, you left the state for greener pastures, and shouldn't be given handouts/benefits because of it. This is a brilliant move by Martin.

Looks like my money and my kids are going to the University of Texas.

That's probably a great decision. These budget cuts are going to cripple LSU for years.

Likewise, though that was going to happen anyway...but to the poster who thinks the Legacy cuts are a great idea, ponder this--it's not just about providing a monetary benefit to alumni (though that's certainly an effect); a university becomes immeasurably stronger by attracting talented students and professors from around the world. This program was one way to allow outstanding students whose parents moved away to attend LSU rather than taking their talents elsewhere. LSU has incredible potential to make a run at Top 50 status as an academic and research institution; while I understand why the Chancellor made the decision here, I believe it may have some seriously detrimental long-term effects down the line. I hope I am wrong.

My guess is you live in Louisiana. You should offer to pay out of state fees also.

The program existed to attract kids that might otherwise not attend LSU. If the school is at capacity, great, otherwise this is a net loss.

Well, this sucks. I had that scholarship. I guess I'll be shelling out some cash for my kids to attend LSU.

I wouldn't call it stupid. But one thing that always struck me was that if a state school gave special treatment to people because they are say, a minority, it tends to be found unconsitutionall and people complain that it should be based strictly on merit. (not taking a position on that either way - that's more poli board material). But wouldn't this be subject to the same principal. I understand the difference constitutionally because its not a "suspect category" but wouldn't it be another instance of special treatment for something other than merit?

Considering the large alumni base out of state (larger than most other state schools), this may piss some people off. Pisses me off.

IMO this is a very bad thing

But do you really think this is an incentive to stay? It's not. What college graduate is thinking about paying for his kids college?

LSU is shooting themselves in the foot on this deal.
I understand the need to use this scholarship money to be apportioned on a merit basis and bring in higher qualified applicants, rather than on a legacy basis.
But it will lower overall enrollment and also may affect some donations from out of state alumni moving forward.

Same here, there goes the legacy, I'm not paying out of state for my kid to go to LSU, I love LSU, but the school just isn't good enough to justify that cost. There are alot of LSU alumni in Texas, alot of Season Ticket holders, alot of people who donate to the school, this is going to piss them off.

This is a large part of my point.
To the guy asking if I am in Louisiana? I am not. I am developing my career elsewhere. I made that choice, and while I hope to potentially move back, until then, I should be paying out of state tuition for my kids. That was a choice I made.
As for it bringing "outstanding kids" to LSU. Believe that your kids are "outstanding". If they were, I am sorry but despite my love for LSU, you should be sending your "outstanding" kids to programs that fit their needs and skills. As long as LSU continues to allow its student body to grow so large, it will not improve. Period.
If your kid is so "outstanding" they should be getting full scholarships OR some type of merit scholarship that didn't have something to do with Mommy or Daddy going to LSU.
Fact is if LSU wants to move into the top 50, they need to shrink their undergrad enrollment and more than double their graduate student enrollment. That is how you increase in these "rankings". PERIOD. No school with 4,000 grad students in a student body of 36,000 (less than ~12% of the entire student body) being graduate students is going to be in the top 50.

How short sighted LSUMafia. I had one in LSU, using the legacy, but she left for UNO because the budget cuts had been so drastic. I have another in LSU Grad school, that will leave the state in a year because of no other options. I love LA, but with no opportunities I had to leave 20 yrs ago. I still go back for games and family, but it ain't the same.

It's not really that, it's the fact that most starting job offers will take kids almost anywhere. Most of the time, that's not LA.

If the kids are "outstanding" then they should qualify for merit based scholarships and this point is moot.
Who it effects are kids who do not have high enough GPA and SAT to receive merit based scholarships and have to pay their own way.

I guess they will no longer solicit or accept donations and contributions from out of state also. What say you?
