Definitely first. One of my all time favorite movies. R. Lee Ermey is the man!

The training portion of the movie is perfect.

It drags a bit in the 2nd half but I think that is because it is hard to match the intensity and dialogue of the 1st half.

I agree and every other basic training portion of a movie has paled in comparison to FMJ.

So many quotable moments from that movie

Middle of the pack. Behind movies like 2001, Paths of Glory, Lolita, Spartacus, The Killing & Barry Lyndon. Would be higher if the second half was as good as the first. But higher than Eye's Wide Shut, The Shiniing, Clockwork, Dr. Strangelove, & Killer's Kiss.

Barry Lyndon is the only one I've yet to see, but I think FMJ is probably tied or just edges out The Shining for first.

Paths of Glory

great movie.

I was going to say FMJ is not even his best (anti) war movie

PoG has more subdued elements and better performances (kirk douglas, notably), and even an un-kubrickian sentimental streak at the end. but FMJ definitely has an eerie coolness about it, a tone that's so dark, funny, and then dark again, that I can't think of many movies that can best its command over its unique 'voice'

For me the Ellis Island part of FMJ was fantastic, but the 2nd half was not as good, plus it looks like it was filmed in England and not SE Asia
