Snooty fly fishermen

I have nothing against fly fishing. I've always enjoyed it when I've gone, but being a South Louisiana guy, it's not what I grew up with and not practical for the kind of fishing I do.
However, I often meet people who fly fish, and seem to turn their nose up at conventional angling. They act like they just got done watching A River Runs Through It and seem to believe other forms of fishing are beneath them or somehow inferior.
Anyone else experience this?

Yeah for the most part dedicated fly fishermen seem snobby. Don't know why though.

There are some duck ponds I fished for years, never ever saw anyone in them.
These flyrod geeks started showing up and look at us like WTF are you doing in MY pond.
Thats when I show them how to waggle up a boat in shallow water and pop it up on a plane.

Other than south Florida and the Bahamas, my encounters with fly fisherman have made me feel like they're pompous jack asses. Not saying they're all this way, but it seems like most fly fisherman feel like their way of catching fish is more intricate and sophisticated, some way or another making them superior to conventional anglers. Most guys in the Bahamas I fished with were natives and that's how they were raised fishing (besides hand lining). With those guys it wasn't about image.

I love fly fishing for all kinds of fish... bream, bass, mountain trout... and lately I've started catching redfish, specks, and even flounder on certain lures. When I fish with my kids, I use my fly rod like a cane pole with a tiny cork and a cricket.
I don't turn my nose up at conventional angling, but I think its quite interesting... because I remember a time when this same thing occurred with people that fished with live bait. The artificial bait folks looked down upon people that fished with shiners or grass shrimp for sac-a-lait, or night crawlers for bass.
As far as it being practical... meh. It all depends on what you use and where you go.
Fly fishing is fun, and challenging, but in no way would I consider it superior to other forms of fishing. Its pretty cool though, to watch a guru catch a bug on the river that fish are feeding on ... and tie up a reasonable facsimile right there in his hands in about 60 seconds out of a hook, some thread, and squirrel fur from last hunting season and start catching fish on it.

Yes. I like fly fishing and there is a dignity to it but some of the "snooty" people have no fundamental's as in 10 to 2(casting motion to get the fly out there properly).
I was living in Connecticut and the first person I met outside of work was a dude and his wife from Mandeville. He asked if I wanted to go catch some Smallmouth bass on the river.
I took my fly rod and an ultralight. The snooty New Englander's looked at us like we from another planet.
After catching a few on wet fly's my friend said "lets show em how to do it." We broke out our spinning gear, tied on crawfish colored bandit crankbaits and caught 62 smallmouths. We released all of them.
The look on the "snooty dudes" was priceless.

Right, and where I go isn't conducive to fly fishing. Heavy cover. Worm/jig fishing. It just ain't happening with a fly rod.
The only time I use a fly rod is during the annual hickory shad run at Fletcher's Boat House in DC, which has progressively gotten worse every year due to illegals keeping dozens of them when you aren't supposed to keep any. But, that's another thread.

Nothing like catching a mess of bream on a flyrod.

Fly fishing is possible for any condition except 20+ mph wind

Personally I don't bother fishing in 20+ winds, regardless of what I'm throwing. But, I see what you mean by the "purists," I know plenty of people who prefer the challenge of fly fishing that are still great people. I guess regardless of what you're doing, in life, you're going to come across people like this...

I'm sure fly fishing has jackasses just like every other activity in the world. I work with a guy that fly fishes and he's a great guy to about anything outdoors. Like has been said before, he just prefers the challenge of fly fishing.

I don't get the whole "challenge of fly fishing" phrase. Does that mean other kinds of fishing aren't challenging?
Posted on 8/9/10 at 7:18 pm to blueboy
It's harder to fly fish than use a baitcaster.

That is an understatement.

Really? I've always found fly fishing to be relatively easy. Maybe I'm just a natural.
Me > you.

I guess not everybody is born naturally limp wristed.

I can fly fish in heavy cover no problem.

I never said I couldn't do it, just that it's not the best approach. I bank fish a lot and flipping/pitching is the way to go. Yes, I could fly fish in this situation, but I don't want to be driven completely insane until I'm well into my 80's.
