That B.O.E.M. is going to get hard to get used to.

Anywho, the inspector called a friend from here and asked about the (Supposed) seepage coming from the sea floor. He said they were getting a pretty good laugh about how viral the whole thing has gotten. He said, all I can tell you is that the pressure was still very slowly increasing so that's all that mattered right now.

One man, 5 hour inspection. Checked IADC's, BOP test charts, the well program and then combed the outside of the rig. No Inc's, no issues.

Found out something really petty, he didn't eat at lunch time with us, he just stayed in the office. We heard through the office grapevine that they are not allowed to eat lunch (Galley food) on the rigs anymore. Dumb!

I guess it has something to do with the whole "Accepting gifts" crap that the media blew way out of proportion.

Two Lake Charles inspectors REALLY did a lot of damage to MMS.

That is the

Barack
Obama
Energy
Mandate

I wonder if those inspectors will be able to use the shitter on the rig or if they will have to hold it until they get back to the office. Couldn't a shitter be considered perk?

Wow!!! That didn't take long at all for someone to come up with an acronym. Should have known it'd be here at TD.

I thought is was BOEMRE now. Anyways, congrats on the INC free inspection.

I am sure we will make sure they stay clear of the galley when they come to our facility.

Are you talking about the test charts or the BOP's physically?

I've been working on the Rowan EXL 1...They have been accused of going to rigs and only eating lunch and then leaving....which sometimes seemed true. If we had a good cook then we would get more visits than normal. As of June 28th they can no longer eat on the rigs.

Back in the day when I was offshore the spread improved a lot when MMS did an inspection. Not that it was bad before but when the guberment landed it was pretty impressive. That will be a change for them – full on spreads to a tuna sandwich from a brown bag will suck.
The rig/platform was a busy place before an inspection – everyone from the company man to the cooks were moving. Unannounced inspections were pretty hairy and if they made it through those w/o an ink everyone was very happy.

No way dude. Everyone knows the MMS were buddy-buddy with the oil companies and never inspected nor inc'ed anyone.

May seem petty but this is very common, in many different industries. For example, IRS agents that sit with a business owner or individual are not allowed to even accept a drink from them (perhaps fear of poisining above all else). I actually think its a wise choice to not fraternize with the company that you are inspecting. Makes perfect sense to me.

It's a lot different when you can go up the street to a restaurant and get your own hot meal. Offshore... those alternatives don't exist.

Secondly, food is a big deal in offshore culture. A lot of operators take pride in their food. It's one of the few real perks of the job. And the food is free for everyone on the platform, not just the MMS inspector.

I've had operators cook special meals for me. Not because I was some bigwig. Just because I was a visitor. I suppose manners will be outlawed next.

How long is an inspector on the rig typically?

depends, could be a short 1-2 hr inspection; could be much more in depth and run several hours. also keep in mind they fly out at about 8 and try and return to be back to the beach around 4, so being very far offshore has an effect as well.

occasionally they'll end up having to spend the night due to chopper mechanical problems or severe weather, but that's really rare.

in my experience, the MMS inspectors have always eaten the same food the entire crew was eating, but i can't speak to how things used to be.

are you talking about annual production inspections, where they'll come out every day for some period of time going through paperwork, checking shut downs, etc.?
