the ship was sent somewhere the day of the rig explosion. They then had to cut the 12'holes in the hull to make it a skimmer. I'm sure that took some time.

yes it did. It was completed 6 mos ago, but didnt start getting converted to a skimmer unitl a few days after the explosion. That took some time, then I'm sure it took more than a few weeks to mob to the GOM. They got it here as fast as they possibly could.

Largest skimmer in the world! The tanker was just converted.... aw screw it! Since when do facts matter on this site. It is all Obama's fault. BP, Obama and global warming had a secret meeting the day of the rig exploded and they decided to let us sit in this crap for two months before they would allow the A Whale to enter the fray.

Because it looks a helluva lot like this thing IMHO. (but perhaps a little bigger... and owned by non-Arabs).

omegaman - You'll appreciate this. I did a TinEye search on the tanker pictured in that article and found that exact same image again HERE.

If everything I've read to this point is true - Then a "facts only" version of events would be as follows: Vessels pf the exact same type as A WHALE have been in existence since the early- to mid-1990s and were instrumental in cleaning up a couple of "media-downplayed" spills on the Red Sea. Fast Forward to the present... A couple weeks after the DH explosion and spill - the owners of A WHALE decided to convert one of their brand new tankers into this... "one of a kind" skimmer.

** The ______ is because I don't know if it was BP, our Gov't, the Coast Guard, independent scientists or whatever authority (or combination of the aforementioned) that actually said it wasn't feasible.
