How accurate are the FIFA World Rankings

In regards to what team is better overall? How are the points determined? Is it by vote or some sort of scoring system? And with the US 14th and Ghana 32nd, would that make us relatively heavy favorites for this game?
Sorry, I'm new to this whole thing. Just hopin' the US can win a few more.

They will be the fan favorite. Thats for sure. Being the last team left from Africa.

The ranking are incredibly abstract. I wouldnt count on them.

I was wondering that myself. From the play of France, Italy, England, etc. they don't seem too accurate. It seems like they are based off of name recognition only.

I think we won over a lot of fans our last two games.
Slovenia is ranked 25 and algeria is ranked 30, to give you a little perspective. Ghana is a good team though and it won't be easy. However, they have yet to score a goal that wasn't from a penalty kick in this world cup.
I hope we beat them bad though, after knocking us out in 2006.

Not very. I wouldn't be surprised if we are considered a slight underdog.

For sure. A guy I work with is from South Africa, and he was cheering REALLY hard for Ghana this afternoon. He was as happy about the Ghana win the other day as he was about anything South Africa did (which wasn't much to be fair)

I would. They have two penalty kicks and that's it. They almost lost to australia (with a red card).
It seems they have good defense, only giving up 2 goals, but they don't look that good.

wasnt the US ranked 4th going into the 2006 WC?
If so then that should answer your question on rankings

The best national team ranking is the Soccer Percentage Index (SPI) that ESPN calculates fairly frequently.

They aren't very accurate, but the thing to remember is that anyone can win on any given day. If you make the world cup you are a good team, no matter your ranking. Some teams may shite the bed (France cough), but they are all good teams. I can't help but think outside of the top 3 you could rank the teams just about anywhere.
ETA: but even the top 3 lose to "lesser" teams: Spain for example.

If I remember correctly, its simply a point system based on the matches (competitive or exhibition) that a national side plays against international competition. Some national teams play more exhibitions/warmups/qualifiers than others, and this leads to inaccurate rankings.
In the end, Ghana is a very good team. It took Germany getting an amazing shot to beat them despite them being without their best player in Essien this entire tournament. It will be a tough game, but to answer your question, Ghana did not play alot of exhibition games, thus their lower ranking. They were one of the top 2 African countries the past 4 years with a healthy Essien.

just look it up on fifa. They are pretty accurate. We played in the confeds cuup though. That helped us out a lot. You get points for all kinds of things.

FIFA rankings are beyond worthless.
