When SEC Expands, Will The Common Opponent Be Dropped

For the life of me, I don't know how LSU got stuck with Florida as the eastern division common opponent. It kinda sucks.

It should. The Third Saturday in October has definitely cooled off since Alabama and Tennessee went to seperate divisions. That used to be "The Game" but today it's pretty much another game on the schedule. It's not even played on the third Saturday in October anymore. And yes, I agree that LSU is getting screwed being forced to play Florida every year.

The SEC adopted a six-game schedule sometime in the late 1960's, shortly after contracting to 10 teams. The schedule would include five permanent opponents and one game to be rotated bi-annually among the remaining four opponents in the conference. Being that LSU, Florida, and Kentucky were the three most isolated schools, they had fewer historical SEC rivalries than the more centralized schools, so the three of them were assigned each other as annual opponents. LSU/UF has just survived to this day.
And it doesn't suck. It's a great rivalry (even though some won't admit it), and it's always nationally televised. It benefits LSU a lot more than it hurts LSU.
All that having been said, I hope the SEC drops divisions and puts the top two in the SECCG. This will preserve all the meaningful rivalries (and probably revive ones like AU/FL).

i think it would have to be. if not we'd be stuck playing 1 team every year and each other team once every 7.
also for this reason i dont see anyway auburn gets moved to the east (if we add A&M & Mizzou) as some other posters suggested. no way they keep the common opponent and no way auburn/bama get split IMO

This. There isn't a game I look forward to more than the LSU/Florida game.

Not a chance in hell. Bama is the SEC's version of Texas. They will never give up the Tennessee game. also, it's why we'll add a team to the East instead of two West teams: logically, the conference should move Auburn to the East and make the Bama game the annual rivalry... but that would hurt Bama, so it will never, ever happen. Nevermind that Auburn had to give up the Florida rivalry when we went to 12.

i just dont see the conferance setting it up to where we only play certain teams once every 6 or 7 yrs

i don't see that either, b/c that would mean it'd be 12-14 years before we'd see certain opponents in BR

It was later than that. Even as late as the '70s, teams were playing different numbers of games. LSU won the SEC title in 1970 with a 5-0 SEC record.

LSU and UF were playing every year long before that. At least as early as the early 1960s, maybe even in the '50s. Kentucky-LSU played every year since the '50s, I think.

I agree with this. It cost us an SEC West and possible overall SEC title in 1996 and 2006, but it also cost Florida the SEC East and possible overall SEC title in 1997, 2005 and 2007. Maybe 2002, also, if I recall correctly.

I think divisional play will be fine if we go to 9 conference games.

Kentucky-LSU played every year since the '50s, I think.

You might convince Ole Miss to switch opponents.

Yall keep talking about bama/tennssee but don't even mention UGA/Auburn. It's the oldest rivalry in the south and has been played since 1892. I believe it's like the 8th most played rivalry in history. No way that game gets split up.

Tell all of the teams in the eastern division that it sucks that they have to play Florida every year. Florida wasn't always a powerhouse.
