I know the driving force behind the expansion is the TV deal, but does the fact that Ohio State and the rest of the Big Ten have sucked in big games recently play a part in the Big Ten (and then the rest of the conferences) wanting to expand and get some better teams to try and change that reputation?

The motivation behind expansion is to get the Big Ten Network on as many tvs in America as they can. Not even the Ivy League schools have a network to advertise their institutions. The Big Ten and its member institutions have a chance to solidify themselves as the premiere public institutions in the country. While college football brings in millions a year, academics have the potential for billions a year. Michigan brought in $5 billion last year. During the school year they rake in almost $20 million a day.

The funds from sports look like a lemonade stand compared to what the Big Ten has a chance to do in academics.

Academically?
The ACC and Pac10 would be very surprised to hear that.

Yeah that's the reason.

Obviously a playoff game is the reason. Notre Dame may yet grow to regret not doing a deal.

The Pac-10 and ACC dont have a 24/7/365 network to advertise their schools. The Big Ten Network has academic programming throughout the year, interviews with professors, campus tours, research profiles, etc. I would think most schools would like to get paid millions of dollars to advertise.

By any measure, attempting to place the Big 10 on an academic scale equivalent to Duke, UVA, UNC, Georgia Tech, etc or Stanford, Cal, USC, UCLA, etc is simply witless.

The Ivy League does not need its own network they have the broadcast and cable news networks, including Fox,, and C-SPAN.

The Big 10 is deeper academically than the ACC but the ACC clearly has more schools in the top 50. BTW, you missed Wake Forest, BC and Miami all of whch are top 50 universities. Still, the ACC is easily the premier academic BCS conference in the nation IMO.

After Stanford, Cal, USC, UCLA and Washington the PAC 10 becomes pathetic academically. After Washington at number 42 you have to go all the way down to #102 to find Arizona. The Big Ten overall is a much better conference academically than the PAC 10. However, I'd be proud for either of my kids to sport a degree from one of their top 5 universities.

Very well put. Unfortunately most people on this board cannot comprehend this.
