...then why are the SEC, Big East and ACC the conferences forward-looking enough to have names that don't have to change when the number of teams in the conference adjusts ?!

They've built up the brand name with the Big 10 network. They might change it but I doubt it.

The Big Ten had 11, now 12
The Big XII had 12, now 10
The Pac-10 had 10, now 11
Don't hey teach math any more?

AS noted elsewhere - schools of higher (l)earning.

My post in another thread:

The Big Ten isn't a conference, it's not a set of schools, it's a brand, an institution, if you will. It will not and should not be renamed.

so the marketing is more important than the actual Union of schools?

Join the Big Ten - so you can be branded and institutionalized

No, I was kidding. But, in all seriousness, the Big Ten, while obviously a conference dedicated to prestigious academics and athletics ( ) is a brand, too, and really shouldn't be renamed.

It's funny how the Big 10 and Pac 10 are inviting all these juggernaut academic institutions such as Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech while ignoring Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse and Baylor.

While they're not looking for necessarily an "increase" in academics, they are refusing to take teams with bad academics (at least the Big Ten is). For example, look at WVU. Solid football program. Just made the Final Four in b-ball. Markets, while not terrible, aren't great, but neither are Nebraska's. Their academics suck, though. Pitt is about the same level as WVU, athletically. I'd argue they'd bring in less markets than WVU (since Pitt is mostly pro sports/PSU territory). Yet, while I highly doubt they'll receive a bid, they've been in the discussion this whole time. WVU never has been. Pretty interesting.
