Despite being named Director of Tiger Band after the announcement of Frank Wicks' retirement, Linda Moorehouse is accepting an "unsolicited and unexpected offer" from the University of Illinois.

Why would she leave now?
Does anybody connected to the band know the real story and will you share it?

This is horrible news.
Yep. Big blow to Tiger Band. I wonder who they'll bring in on such short notice.

First Wickes leaves and now this.

I recall that LSU was going to reduce the size of the band for this year due to budget cuts. Could her leaving have something to do with that?

An email sent by Dr. Moorehouse said the job offer came in the last 2 weeks. She also said:
"The decision to leave was
prompted by (1) an unsolicited and unexpected offer to join the UI band division two weeks ago, and (2) the realization of my situation here at LSU."
I think a large number of people were waiting on an announcement similar to this. Although she was named Director of Tiger Band, she was not listed as one of the final 3 candidates for the Director of Bands position. I can't say whether the two are related, your guess is as good as mine.

Pardon my lack of knowledge, but is the band considered part of the athletic department, i.e., does Alleva wield any power over it?

I can't imagine how she didn't make the final cut. Sounds like the good ole boys are at it again at LSU.

I don't know specifics of how everything is organized, Alleva may have some say over her position as Director of Tiger Band but Director of Bands is decided by solely by The School of Music and Dramatic Arts. She did say this in her email.
"The announcement
of ³Director of Tiger Band² made this past spring was done to help alleviate
fears of ³change.² As it turns out, the title change does not enhance my
position at LSU, nor does the offer from Illinois."

So she's leaving LSU for a job that doesn't enhance her position? Sounds like something fishy is going on.

I hate to see her go. Someone, and I assume it was her, was responsible for putting an excellent product on the field and in the stands over the years.
For me, the band has been a bright spot in the midst of the recent disappointments on the field.
I hope the infrastructure is in place to continue TGBFTL's excellence without missing a beat (sorry, couldn't resist).

I wonder if this has something to do with all of the budget cuts.
