4 superconferences; 4-team playoff, English Premier League Style

If this all shakes down like many think, then we'll be left with four superconferences: the SEC, the ACC, the Big 10+1+5, and the hippy league. How about having those four conference champions be in a four-team playoff? Before Utah and Kansas go whining to Congress, the NCAA will agree that the have-nots have the ability to join the have conferences on a performance-based basis similar to that of the English Premier Soccer League. You have four have-not conferences that are each paired up with a have conference. Every two years, the team with the worst two-year record in the upper division will be replaced by the team from the paired conference in the lower division that has the best two-year record. Every will conference will have a conference championship game, so it will essentially be an eight-team playoff.

If you don't join a conference, you can EABOD and join the Football Championship Subdivision. Also, the NCAA will introduce a new form of probation: relegation to the lower division for however long they see fit.

I like the part about the 8 team playoff that could result when you add in conference championship games. The soccer bullshite would never fly (and I think you wrote all of that tongue-in-cheek).

Say what you want about soccer but the relegation idea is gold and keeps even the crappiest teams games interesting

I don't doubt that it works for soccer, and it's a good idea for professional sports. But not for intercollegiate athletics when the playing fields aren't really even. Imagine if Vandy got deported out of the SEC for Appalachian St...that would be stupid.

It would be more likely to see Washington State replaced by Boise State or Vandy getting replaced by TCU.

This idea is too big to fail.

for professional sports there's real money on the table

but for college sports since nobody "owns" the teams it's much more feasible

the smaller schools would like it since they can compete for championships again AND get a shot at the big time

the biggest schools wouldn't care.

the big-ish schools would be against it

I can promise you that Florida, Bama, and the rest of the big schools in the SEC would throw a fit if there was a scenario proposed that could remove Vandy from the SEC, even for a year.

With all the money that would pour in, they wouldn't really care.

Man, great minds think alive. I've been having the same thoughts all day. Here's how I would do it.

Pac 16

Arizona
Arizona State
California
Oregon
Oregon State
Stanford
UCLA
USC
Washington
Washington State
Texas
Texas A&M
Texas Tech
Colorado
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State

Bottom four teams are relegated to ....

Mountain West (16 teams)

Utah
UNLV
BYU
Wyoming
New Mexico
TCU
Colorado State
San Diego State
Air Force
Boise State
Fresno State
Hawaii
Idaho
Utah State
San Jose State
Nevada

Top four teams are promoted to Pac 16.

Big 16

Michigan
Northwestern
Minnesota
Ohio State
Purdue
Wisconsin
Indiana
Penn State
Illinois
Michigan State
Iowa
Nebraska
Missouri
Notre Dame
Pittsburgh
Rutgers

Bottom four teams are relegated to ....

MAC (16 teams)

Akron
Bowling
Buffalo
Kent State
Miami(OH)
Ohio Temple
Ball State
Central Michigan
Eastern Michigan
Northern Illinois
Toledo
Western Michigan
Kansas
Kansas State
Iowa State

Top four teams are promoted to Big 16.

SEC stays at 12 teams

Alabama
Tennessee
Georgia
LSU
Florida
Auburn
Arkansas
Mississippi
Kentucky
South Carolina
Vanderbilt
Mississippi State

Bottom three teams are relegated to...

Sun Belt (16 teams)

Troy
Middle Tennessee
Louisiana-Monroe
Florida Atlantic
Louisiana-Lafayette
Arkansas State
North Texas
Western Kentucky
New Mexico State
Baylor
SMU
UTEP
Rice
Houston
Tulsa
Louisiana Tech

Top three teams are promoted to SEC.

ACC (stays at 12 teams)

Clemson
Boston College
Florida State
Wake Forest
North Carolina State
Maryland
Georgia Tech
Virginia Tech
Miami (FL)
North Carolina
Duke
Virginia

Bottom 3 teams are relegated to...

Big East (16 teams)

Cincinnati
West Virginia
Connecticut
South Florida
Louisville
Syracuse
East Carolina
Central Florida
Southern Miss
Marshall
UAB
Memphis
Navy
Army
Tulane
FIU

Top 3 teams are promoted to ACC.

Champions of four major conferences advance to meet in a four team playoff. And with the relegation system, every team has the opportunity to win it all. It's perfect.

So, is this promote/demote system going to be in place for every sport?

Only for football. Every other sport has a playoff system in place which gives every team a fair opportunity to win it all.

I think I'm gonna call Obama and tell him to use government intervention to put this in place

Every team has a chance to win it all in basketball, baseball, etc, but I wouldn't call it even. If a team was able to join a big conference, they'd be able to attract better recruits, and they'd certainly make more $$ which would allow them to improve facilities, hire better coaches, etc. There's a reason you hardly ever see the Butlers of the world play for a basketball championship. Put Butler in the Big 10 for several years, and they could compete more regularly.

It's not even. It will never be even. This isn't Russia. This is America. Everyone deserves a chance.
