To those with duck hunting leases in the closed area’s. Are you hearing how they will handle this. I’m hesitant to want to pay for a lease that is in an area of Lafitte that is closed to all fishing, but I hate to lose a lease we had if it opens back up. Anyone heard how this will be handled from the people you lease from?

We lease from Burlington Resources and are waiting for a response from them now.

If you don't mind me asking, how much does a lease run? Assuming you guys get to hunt there this year. I've leased in the Mississippi Delta for the last few years but really want to move south.

Maybe you can hire these folks to help you clean your birds

duck season could be a real disaster.

particularly if large chunks of marsh are still closed to fishing and/or are closed to hunting and other activities - the birds will simply pile up into these areas and not go anywhere else.

in otherwords duck season could really really suck

and that would cause the birds to gang up in the places with the most oil and be even worse

equally dangerous to the ducks is the oil that would under the surface and tar balls on the bottom -

add to that the areas closed to fishing NOW hold an awful lot of ducks with hunting pressure - remove hunting pressure and it is a real recipe for disaster.

Just cut 2 checks for ours, and we were in a closed zone that has since opened back up. I'm fully expecting the feds to close duck season in the marsh if oil is still an issue. But, i'm willing to pay just to keep my lease even if I cant hunt.

if they close duck season in the marsh - they may as well close it in the rest of the state - if any significant pieces of marsh have NO HUNTING, NO FISHING, NO BOAT Traffic - the refuge affect will take over and other than brief forays in or out.... ducks will park there esp. the mouth of the river and atch. delta.

bigger question - can they keep the ducks out of contaminated areas...

At this point it might not be a bad idea to close it all over, I've always had thoughts of keeping the season closed for a year to get the numbers back up.
But, would the oil kill just as many ducks as would have been shot.

If not, why fight it, close it and let the numbers get back up and have BP refund everyone who ahs paid for a lease.

Thats the response I just got from Burlington, "we are doing business as usual. I guessing if this lingers into next year, then our office would reevaluate the circumstances prior to next years billing and would decide at that time how we would handle. would have to deal with BP directly in order to request compensation for personal losses."

I would guess if any place has oil, large area's around it will be closed if not the whole state, no way for them to dermine where the birds are flying to/from

You've got to be kidding. Close the season all over the state? The guy who has 1,000 acres off the Mississippi right near Arkansas is going to have an issue with that. If the oil is in the marsh in places it will likely kill the feed in those areas resulting in low numbers of ducks. If a hurricane comes in then the uncertainty will certainly rise. Closing the season all over the state would be an extreme overreaction.
