I just joined today for an online checking and savings account. I am in the process of having my F-I-L buy an insurance product(s) so my wife and I can become full fledge members.

Q. How does USAA stack up against its competition in terms of price with regard to auto and homeowners insurance?

I recently re-shopped my auto insurance and no one could beat what I currently have (America First - member of Liberty Mutual Group). And as of yesterday, I just re-shopped my homeowner's insurance (with America First), but I am now switching to Banker's, as I am able to save nearly $200.00 per year.

Are they competitive in closing costs for home mortgages re-fis?

Anything to be on the look out for? Wary of? Everything I have read and what I have experienced thus far has been top notch, but would like opinions from the Money Board.

I can't speak for Homeowners, because I haven't got a quote yet, but their Auto rate absolutely sucked compared to what I have now(Progressive). As far as checking and Savings, I am very satisfied.

How is the online checking page? user friendly? Is it free to use or is there a monthly fee? I might ditch my bank...

Actually haven't gotten that far ... just set mine up and I am waiting for my funds to be deposited from my local bank.

The whole web site is user friendly.

Free. I signed up for the USAA Four Star Checking and Savings Account.

I've called their customer service twice. Absolutely excellent customer service. Friendly, knowledgeable and quick to respond.

Interesting to know. I am still going to give them a shot vs. America First.

I have homeowners and auto with them. Haven't really shopped around with regards to price, so I can't comment there. However, I can say that their customer service is top notch. Have only had to file claims twice.... basically one phone call each time...no hassle at all.

I've had my homeowner's and auto with them for over 10 yrs. I've never had a problem with them. Of course, I have also not had a claim on homeowner's or auto for as long as I've been with them. Customer service is top notch. Anytime I do need info they take care of it.

Solid company.
H/O runs a bit high. Auto rates for officers and spouses are excellent. For dependents or piggybacks (family of officers), not so much. Had USAA for years until the kids were driving and needed coverage too. Then a combined Allstate H/O and Auto policy was better.

Thank you all for the feedback. My F-I-L was in the Army, not sure of his rank, but he currently has State Farm for home and auto and based upon all the rate increases that SF has asked for and received, I am hopeful that he may be able to save some money with them.

I like their online bill pay and transfer setup. I've had no problems.

Our homeowner's is crazy low and auto low as well. My older stepdaughter got her own auto policy as a 21 year old, and the rates on that were low (I think her being a member most of her life probably helped).

Not in my experience. The only product we don't really have with them is investments (just one UGMA account now).

I've been with USAA for about 8 years and have slowly migrated all of my financial/insurance/investment accounts to USAA.

Banking is great: ATM fees are reimbursed up to $15/month, there is an iPhone/Blackberry app to deposit checks, the website is easy to use, their Mover's Advantage program is very nice, and the investment tools/advice are invaluable to a novice such as myself.

Insurance is fantastic: I have sometimes found rates a little better elsewhere, but the customer service and convenience of USAA made me stay put. They insure vehicles overseas, have accident forgiveness, and payout claims extremely quick. As somebody mentioned earlier, the rates are best for officers because only officers are full-fledged members of the co-op...my rates noticeably dropped once I commissioned.

I've had great experience with them. My auto is about the lowest I could find from any reputable company. My homeowners is a little high, but it's possible that's caused by USAA setting a minimum coverage instead of letting you really under insure your home.

I like the ability to do everything online for free, especially wire transfers. Their website is also very user friendly. With their checking, you can scan your check and have it deposited immediately instead of mailing, but even if you mail the envelopes don't require postage.

I've got auto, home, flood and life with them right now. I know that when I closed on my house, my mortgage broker signed me up with American National (he forgot to ask me about H/O and there's an Am Nat office right next door), and it was about $100 per year different than my USAA policy. I also just called USAA one day to ask them a question, and we ended up reviewing all of my policies and finding out I was over insured on my house (my fault), so they saved me some money there as well. Also don't forget about the year end "dividends" that they send out to all their auto insurance customers. When my parents had 5 drivers and 4 cars insured with them, they got almost $1,000 back. This last year, I got $100 back, which I thought was great.

I've filed 1 claim with them and we had no problems at all getting it taken care of.

All in all, USAA is and and in my book.

ETA- I just found out they are now offering Health Insurance through Assurant. The quote they gave me didn't beat what I have with BCBS, but it's something worth looking into as well if you have an individual policy.

Very good (IMHO)....

But what your are really buying is incredible customer service!

They won't be the lowest, but are always competitive. I have homeowners, an umbrella, auto (four vehicles), and life insurance products. All our grown kids have taken advantage of USAA membership also. Approaching thirty years with them and they have never disappointed me.
