I don't normally post here, just read and try to keep up, but CNN posted this in an article today at 12:04 PM EDT. What the heck??? I thought the decision was already made?

BP will make a decision within the next few hours on whether to proceed with a "top kill" procedure designed to contain oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, the oil company's top official said Wednesday.

Bet on a 2-3 day delay.

if there's a delay, it'd think it's because of the weather IMO

That's what I'm afraid of. The article also says they're figuring out how much pressure the "mud" will have to overcome, but shouldn't they already know that based on the other attempts they've made to shut off the flow?

they want to be as accutate as possible, to do so they want real time measurments incase stuff changed

Its only been 5 weeks. They forgot the calculator and had to go back to England to get one. Next they will remember they forgot the mud.

They were waiting on coast guard approval which they just received a few minutes ago

decision has been made and the testing is still underway.

Oh no he is serious. This is why the government is part of the problem and not the solution.

Ridiculous. Truly, ridiculous.

coast guard gave their approval.
BP is still considering something.
it would be ideal if they shared what the decision being considered is about.

Imagine how it will be when they have to decide whether you need surgery or not.

it's not a walk in the park, that stuff is complicated and takes carefull planning
last i heard the blowout preventer is in bad shape, any added pressure might cause multiple leaks with oils gushing around 100K barrel/day

and the pressure test on the system has just completed within the last few hours. Trust me BP, MMS and USCG ar in no hurry because this is not the time for haste.
Better to get it right than foul up. The BOPD is believed to be working some based on pressure measurments. The riser is believed to be holding back some pressure at 2 kinks. There are things that could go wrong and increase the flow rate and those relief wells are still some time off.
