Pre-injuries Beckwith was a monster.
I love that video and the SWAG our defense had back then.

I had forgotten how awesome it was watching the LSU defense. Aggressive, kick arse and physically dominating. Seems like forever...

Teams spent the whole next week in the ice bath after playing LSU.
We seem soft in comparison now.

i think this asswhipping has alot to do with zona stomping on the "eye of the tiger". The D had one hell of a mean streak

2006 was probably my favorite non-champion team. Either them or 2001. SOOOO much talent. You knew with both the teams we were SO close to a title. If we would've had 2007's schedule that year(Florida and Auburn at home)...

This is better
I want the most hostile, violent, and stifling defense in college football. I want people to think of bruising defense when they think of LSU.

Negative. That's Pelini's D style, not Chavis's.

Yep. Tennessee had good defenses but they never played that way...even when they had Haynesworth, Overstreet, and big John.

We don't have the players to play like that any more

Mr. GlenOaks,
The Chief is too much of a gentleman to play such a nasty dominating defense. He regards it as uncivilized and unsportsmanlike because it hurts your opponents feelings both physically and emotionally as well as being an affront to his lord and mentor Lou Tepper.
Please do not ask the Chief to discard his gentle ways.
Thank you

Sorry, but I don't think you will ever get that with Chavis. He hasn't changed over the past 15 years and I don't see him changing anytime soon.

I think we probably would all like to see more aggression, especially on 3rd down, but the thing I notice from all the clips is that the vast majority of the highlights come against offenses running out of a 2 TE set, with at most 3 receivers...and with the spread becoming more and more popular in recent years, we don't face that as much.
The spread is designed to defeat an aggressive, attacking D. If you release enough safties and linebackers to win the numbers game up front, you're by design going to leave at least one of the wide outs open on the slant or go route or a quick out to a back in the flat. The key to making the math work is to have an absolute beast in the middle of the D-line to eat up double teams, and so far, we haven't had one step up.
Having said all that, though, I still would like to see LSU man up on 3rd and long and bring the pain from time to time. I've got my fingers crossed, so we'll see.

most people dont realize this...your right on...but Saban proved that if you have lockdown corners it can free up your one of your d-b's in your dime packages or your hybrid LB...also one of the reasons why he runs a base 3/4 with a hybrid LB/DE...Muschamp uses one as well at UT...
you have to apply pressure to the QB...only way to beat the spread...see Neb vs UT in Big 12 title game...if Neb had an o they would have won...

I agree...and the common denominator for both Bama and Nebraska?...beastly D-linemen in Cody and Suh. I am confident in saying we have the defensive backfield to make this work, we just need a lineman or two to step up in a big way. I think we'll get that.
