Job titles

I've been tooling around on the interwebz looking for potential jobs and it has occurred to me that I don't really know what job position I should be looking for.
I want to be a financial analyst, but there are classes 1-4. I don't have any work experience, but I don't think I'm a class 1 either.
Would anyone like to shed some light on this for me?

That probably sounded a lot better in your head....

Classes on job titles from my experience are pretty subjective titles. Companies award them by experience generally, and there is not always uniformity between companies. For example, in accounting, experience and title might look like this:
0-3 years = accountant 1
3-7 years = accountant 2
7-15 = 3
15+ = 4
0-3 years = accountant 1
3-7 years = accountant 2
7-15 = 3
15+ = 4

Why don't you think you are class 1? Most likely if you just graduated, you will be classified as a 1 unless you have been working with the company throughout school.

I've only seen job listings with Accountant 1, 2, etc as government jobs but I could be wrong. Usually accountants are labeled as Staff, Senior, Manager, and so on.

I've seen it in both sectors. Just depends on the company. Makes people feel like they are getting a promotion, because they can now put a little II or III next to their title.

Don't know much about either.

I base it mostly on salary paid. I am not really high and mighty about where I am, but a 23 year old with an MBA and 2/3 of his CFA exams passed should not be making 35-45k, IMO. I think 45k is the national average for all finance bachelors.

I usually either go to specific websites (B4, ratings agencies, IBs, Fed banks, comm banks, etc) and see what pops up and read the description. Otherwise, if I'm looking on like Indeed, I just type in various keywords, like business valuation, equity research, valuation, financial analyst, etc, and see what pops up. Every one calls everything by different names. I wouldn't worry about salary, every one thinks they're underpaid, you probably will too. You only set yourself up for disappointment (just being brutally honest here).

Get a job, prove your salt and good things happen for you including bigger titles. I wouldn't focus on titles given you don't have any experience at this time.

It's not about my personal ego with titles, it's about the fact that if I only search Analyst I, I get jobs that have worse pay than I would want my secretary to have.

Haha, I post on the O/T occasionally. Not only will I have a secretary, she will be a 9.7 and always making advances on me, despite my constant reminder that I only roll with 10's.
But seriously, that was just hyperbole.

Yeah don't get caught up in the titles, they're all over the place. Read the descriptions to figure out if its the right job. BTW, how much statistics carries through to L2? L1 pretty much covered all of the stuff I remember about statistics, and I HATE it (doing that review now).
