Going to San Francisco next week. Look for some recommendations for casual places to go for lunch and dinner. We will be staying close to union square, also for looking for places by pier 39, chinatown, japantown and whatever other place people maybe familiar with. Thanks in advance.

I always go to Tadich's Grill, great food, not expensive, ambiance is worth the trip.

Chinatown: Hunan Homes, R&G Lounge
Union Square: Emporio Rulli has a cafe in Union Square, on the corner across from Niketown. Farallon is down Post for seafood in a beautiful room.
Pier 39: avoid, unless you want shitty food.
Japan Town: you'll be right near Fillmore St. SPQR, Jackson Fillmore, Elite Cafe, down the hill is Balboa Cafe.
You'll have better luck finding casual in North Beach, particularly if you like Italian. Rose Pistola, L'Osteria del Forno are both very good. Check out the food section on www.sfgate.com. There's a good search function there for finding restaurants.

Fly Bar, sutter at larkin is closest
During happy hour, pizzas are like 4 bucks and they are really really good, as are their salads. And, happy hour is noon-6:30 weekdays and 3:30-6:30 on weekends. Best deal I found when I was in San Francisco.

-Steps of Rome on Columbus in North Beach. Very good food.
-For Chinese just duck into any small place in China Town or on Irving Street in the Sunset serving Dim Sum and Juk. Seriously, at most of these places you can eat yourself into a larger belt size for about $7-$10.

-coolpapaboze is so right, do your best not to eat anywhere around Pier 39 or the Wharf...Crappy food and prices that will have you harvesting a kidney to pay for the bill.
-If the weather is not too bad just go to North Beach/China Town, grab a great deli sammich at Molinari's on the corner of Columbus and Vallejo, then just walk around and take in the sights...And don't forget to go across the street to Stella's and get a cassata.
